ESP RA.DE. Strangeness

Post by SharkSkin-Man »

I picked up an ESP RA.DE. board about a week ago and I've noticed some strange things, is any of this normal...?

The front two pins of the test switch have been removed (by 'front' I mean the two nearest the Jamma connector). The switch does actually work though.

When I hold down the coin button on my Supergun (Sigma AV7000) for more than 1 second the board reboots.

There is a glitchy line that sometimes appears on the screen, about 2 inches in from the left. I don't think it's down to any loose connections anywhere, as it occurs at the same parts of the game every time (when the Helicopter boss scales up for example).

Any info would be nice to quell my curiosity.

I've experienced strange behaviour too with several boards when the coin button is pressed for a longer period. In real life circumstances this can never happen, because the coin mechanism always works so that it is only activated for a milisecond when you insert a coin into a machine.
So that is not something you have to worry about.
I don't have that board so someone needs to fill in the blanks.
Perhaps try it in mame and see of it occurs there too.
Perhaps make a vid of it an youtube it.

Cool, cheers guys.

I tried running the game in Mame and there are no graphics glitches...but the game seems to be glitchy as fuck anyway, lots of flicker and stuff when things get busy.

Also, as an aside, does anybody know of somewhere/someone in the UK who can burn EPROMs?

The coin error is so people don't fish the games with a quarter tied to a string.
My esprade has graphic glitches, too- on explosions and screen changes sometimes. I thought it was part of the game.

Yeah, a few earlier Cave PCBs have minor glitches. Power bar flicker and a vertical white line on the left hand side on mine at certain points.

Off-topic-on-topic post warning:

I was wondering, do we have an "Is it normal?" thread? I know we have a good number of arcade hardware enthusiasts and I know that arcade games are prone to all sorts of strange "is it meant to do that" behavior, so maybe a general thread like that would be a good idea? I would start one myself but I don't know if there is already one that I missed.

I seem to recall seeing it, yes, unless my memory is playing tricks on me. Also the emulation is way off and in most cases it changes the game to how you might think it should ideally play. For example less slowdown, sprites not disappearing or flickering (which actually causes cool effects on the pcb like the character sometimes just showing up as a shadow when you fire on all cylinders), and some pixels on the high score screen are not lined up "perfectly" on the pcb as they are in mame. On the pcb some of the scrolling text on the high score screen goes a pixel or 2 below what you would expect to be the bottom cutoff (goes into the black).
