Zero Tolerance: Eidos' title ripping-off

Post by Stormwatch »

Once upon a time...

...there was this kickass game called Zero Tolerance.

Image

It was clearly the best of all first person shooters for good
old Sega Genesis. Its developer, Technopop, later had some
money problems and sadly had to shut doors.

More recently, Eidos announced a game named
Zero Tolerance: City Under Fire. Randel Reiss, once
president of Technopop, and still the retainer of its assets,
promptly sued them. So Eidos had to rename their game
Urban Chaos: Riot Response.

Reiss also announced that the real Zero Tolerance
will get an updated PSP version.

Star Wars Starfighter also got into trademark troubles with the name but somehow, it passed through...

Now all the hardcore Urban Chaos fanbase members will be flooding the message boards about how this isn't a real Urban Chaos game (though I'd argue that the original Urban Chaos from Eidos wasn't a real game either :P ).

Zero Tolerance is a great game. I remember I couldn't believe how fast it moved.

Zero Tolerance really looks like crap now so it's hard to believe that was cutting edge 2.5d tech on the genesis. There was no mulitplayer and your viewscreen only took a quarter of your television screen. Ammo was also always way too scarce for a game that was trying to emulate doom.

I can't even remember why I would play this game for hours at a time. It's also so forgettable that I can't remember the ending or the story when I'm pretty sure that I beat this game multiple times.

OKay turns out there was multiplayer. You had to use a link cord, another tv, and another genesis too. Not sure if it was just coop though.

I'd say it was crappy back when it was released too (even though it was really fast, which was pretty amazing). It just garnered praise for being the best FPS on the Genesis (even though its only competition was the awful Battle Frenzy). I mean, Doom (and maybe Doom II, I don't remember) was already out and was head over heels better.

Indeed, there were very few first person shooters for the Genny: other than those already mentioned, a really ugly and almost unplayable piece of crap called Corporation (aka Cyber Cop) by Virgin Games, and TecToy's technically impressive but not much fun port of Duke Nukem 3D.

Zero Tolerance had some interesting features: wall texture animation, wall damage textures, multi-store levels, and the effect of an enemy's blood running down a wall.

Also, it was not a Doom wannabe; limiting the ammo gave a touch of constant fear and insecurity, much like Resident Evil would do years later.

I had no idea there was a genny port of Duke Nukem 3d. I have to track this thing down. Too bad there's so little information on this port.

It is very hard to find, as it was only released in Brazil.
