V for Vendetta (2005)

Happy Guy Fawkes day!

That's what a friend told me today, I was like, huh? What? Then he showed me a clip from V for Vendetta and told me to watch this movie and i'll get it. Considering it's been laying in my backlog for a while, I moved my ass and went to watch it.

Just before I go on about this, i'll say this, don't bother pointing out HOW WRONG the movie is compared to the original graphical novel, I plan to read it at some point, for a "different" take.

I CERTAINLY wasn't ready for how much GOOD this movie contains, the plot, the writing, the character, it all worked, as if, it was a part of a plan for us, the viewers. It's a masterfully crafted movie with level of polish you would expect in a symphony, one of my now all time favorites. To give away anything from this movie, would ask for divine punishment, sit down, open your mind, enjoy this orchestra of quality, it is not shakespeare, it is entertaintment but it certainly, will appeal to your movie critic mind.

Remember, remember, the fifth of november, the Gunpowder Treason and Plot.

Your first time there? Man, make some popcorn and go for the Star Wars prequel reviews, you're in for a treat.
This reminded me of that Big Bang Theory Episode where Sheldon insisted on starting with the prequel trilogy for Star Wars day, when everyone else just wanted to watch 4-6.

Portman's British accent made me cringe through the whole thing. Once I noticed I couldn't help it. I thought her acting, as a whole, wasn't very good. The editing pleased me quite though, if I remember correctly.

Just watched The Third Man after a 15 year separation. What the fuck am I supposed to say about a classic like this that hasn't already been said? Maybe the one thing I don't get is why Lime invited Martins to visit him when he did, but other than that, the film does everything with an amazing level of competence and the few points of ambiguity feel good for being ambiguous. Weird how Welles was apparently really hands off, yet his earlier films certainly inspired much of the visual look. Carol Reed must have had a 'one of us' moments and just decided to make an Orson Welles film. That said, its is a much easier film to digest than Kane, and it brings a sense of humor that Kane is lacking. They are very different films, and comparing them is my own fault...I need to see The Lady from Shanghai and The Stranger for some better comparisons.

I thought it was a bag of shit, I despise it. Part of that is owed to the fact that it bastardised a perfectly excellent graphic novel in numerous offensive ways, missing the point, tone, and softening it into a sort of Hollywood V For Babies - but even without the relationship it was still barely watchable thanks to dire rescripting, dumb casting (I like Stephen Fry, but not in this, come on) and mood killing humour. It took all the graphic novel's heady atmosphere and grit, a warped alternate, fascist 1980s London, and of course Hollywoodised it into a kind of near future setting that made no sense whatsoever. Will never watch again, while Alan Moore has decreed to never watch it ever. Smart guy.

The best thing about that movie was seeing Jonathan Ross absolutely rip it to shreds in his TV review.

The worst part was that I didn't heed his warning. :(

Yeah, a friend of mine liked that one, but after learning about how it differed from the graphic novel, I determined immediately I'd never touch it.

For me, one of the best build ups in cinema... The waiting for Welles' character to slowly show up in the movie with that cheeky grin on his face. Classic scene if there ever were one.

It makes sense in a more heavily controlled future way.
V is not for Vendetta. Take a look at the 1984 film front cover.

Well its not quite entertainment, it has a fair amount of thinly-veiled truth.
You noticed the scene where the News READER blinks a lot when she knows she's READING a fake story with an agenda attached. It really has reached that point in the real World.

As for me, I watched Dark Shadows with Depp and Eva Green. Just like the reviews - very lacklustre.

There's much hype into Christopher Nolan's Interstellar sci-fi flick which clocks in at a whopping 169 minutes long (which is 2 hours & 49 minutes). Should be interesting with the premise of trying to find another hospitable planet for the doomed Earth's population as shown within the movie itself. But with such an interstellar gateway (aka wormhole) located nearby the planet Saturn seems a bit contrived (wouldn't it affect the nearby planets' orbits -- namely Saturn, Jupiter, etc?) -- for the sake of the film, the wormhole doesn't affect the nearby planets anyways but it's a serious thought to ponder a bit about if you will.

With actor Matthew McConaughey portrayed as Cooper whom is in charge of a super ultra-secretive NASA ragtag team trying to look for a new world to populate, it's an interesting idea mixing topics of gravity, physics, the concept/theory of space-time continnum, black holes and travelling at light speed (186,000 mph) with the notion of having the audience smart enough to "suspend their disbelief" at the door while watching it. But with director Nolan, he goes into greater detail of how it all works in this particular film with the statement: "This is plausible. This is how." Could such a spaceship withstand the unmeasurable gravitational forces of a black hole that not even light can escape from it whatsoever? It'd spell certain doom for the entire spacecraft and it's crew in hindsight (since they'd be going faster than the speed of light upon approaching the event horizon of a black hole).

If you watch "Star Trek: the Motion Picture" flick circa 1979, Spock says that a Voyager VI series satellite went into a black hole and made it through passing by a machine planet that accepted it as it's own (thus giving it super advanced AI and armed with exotic weaponry on it's travels back to planet Earth).

The OAV anime series, Gunbuster, does explore the issue of time passage when travelling at sub-light speeds while some characters are younger during those travels whereas some of their cohorts are older upon returning back from such sub-light speeds on Earth.

In the Star Wars flicks, computers compensate for the jump to lightspeed with the crew to age at the same rate as others in nearby galaxies so that particular issue doesn't happen/occur upon the return from lightspeed (with the age difference between characters and whatnot).

So THAT's how Bruce Wayne got from that hole in South America back to Gotham with no money or equipment in Dark Knight 3. He used a wormhole! That's also how Bane got those bikes into the stock exchange! And how Bruce Wayne escaped the nuclear blast! Every plothole in Dark Knight 3 can be explained by a wormhole.

Stay tuned for Dark Knight 4, where Bruce Wayne gets hunted by Scorpius!

This guy is an executive producer. From everything I've read, it's actually being hailed as the first movie to actually portray a wormhole in an accurate way. "Accurate" being loosely used since they are theoretical.

As for why it doesn't fuck up other planets, I would assume you don't just fall into a wormhole without opening it somehow. Total guess. They could totally shit the mattress on that front.

Lucy.
Too short and clumsy, sometimes utterly dumb and cheap, like it was made by a teenager.
The base idea for the story is good though, the movie deserved a better - smarter - film maker.

The Best Offer

Started well for me. I like Rush, and the plot really intrigued me in, here. I don't think it deserves the praise it gets, mostly for the reasons in the spoilers below. A mildly interesting watch, if you have nothing better to do, but Tornatore did way better than this. If you intend on watching the movie, refrain from reading the spoilers.
Spoiler
I am not convinced by the twist at all. It would take way too much for the people to actually pull this off. The fact that he's never seen her wander about during the day, even thought she had supposedly gone out 225 times or something, makes little sense. The fact that Billy would do this to him, hell could do this to him, also makes little sense. As a viewer, I feel cheated with the ending. Little, in his dealings with Billy, could foreshadow this drastic turn of events. Too many moving parts in the grand scheme of things, I don't believe it one bit. Within the same genre, there are way better movies. I will not name them here so you are not spoiled great movies, but if you want to know more you can pm me.
The Man from Nowhere

I loved other Korean movies (Lady Vengeance being one of my favorite movies), but didn't enjoy this one. Takes quite a while for things to start, and I didn't care much for anything happening. I thought the movie was too raw - no "art" in the fighting at all, no real efficient use of music. A few scenes are too deliberate; they were sprinkled here and there to shock mostly but didn't click with me. I can't recommend this one. Something like The Raid: Redemption uses a more no-nonsense approach, less "close ups on a face tearing up" crap and edgier editing.

Tombstone - 1993

Love the concept and friendships in the main characters, but some scenes are way over-acted. The Mourning-in-the-rain scene for example. However nomination for Stephen Lang as best drunk/lout/cowboy scum yet!

Liked this one for Val Kilmer's Doc Holiday. It's hard to like Val for anything, but I liked him in this. And I can't ever fault Kurt Russell. Ever.

Still, watching Dead Wood will ruin you for almost any non-Wayne non-Spaghetti Western.
