What [not shmup] game are you playing now?

Anything from run & guns to modern RPGs, what else do you play?

Bought a $20 PSN card and was wondering which game to get: Wizardry or Legasista. Both are dungeon crawlers but the latter plays at real-time and has random, extremely difficult dungeons so ended up getting that one.

Seems fun so far but I'm quickly realizing this game is all about your equipment and I'm worried that I may need to grind for a long time to get good drops.

A quick peek in another forum and this is the opinion of a guy who got the platinum: "This game was a major pain the ass. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone" :|

Guilty Gear XX #Reload [PC].
grabs in this game are the silliest thing ever

Oh, and Sonic Rush [DS].
Man, why did I delete my save file? I want to do time attack...
I forgot how much bullshit some of the levels had in this game, fuck Altitude Limit act 2. I regularly question whether they actually had people playtest the levels whenever I play Mirage Road act 1 and die because I was rolling when I got to the zip line early in the stage.

apparently, rolling in Sonic is bad now [Sonic also doesn't lose that much friction when in a roll, if any -- but it keeps you from spending boost when there are enemies in the way, and it's a normal habit to have for a Sonic player on a slope]

It's still pretty fun, the stages that are actually good are really fun to speedrun. Used to have an awesome ~42 second time for 1-1 [might have mentioned it in this thread years ago].

extra dumb shit: both players can't be the same character in 2p, even though Blaze is loads slower
so, you pretty much have to have both players do time-attack races [which requires an all-clear save]
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

This wasn't fixed in Sonic Rush Adventure either. :(

I have been playing Shantae and the Pirate's Curse and recently completed it with the good ending. Definitely my favorite in the series. Lots of nice touches here and there and dialog is laugh out loud funny at times. Squid Baron is hilarious.

Bust-A-Move [Neo-Geo/MAME].

Lots and lots of fun in versus.
Managed to go from "I'm on top of the world! Get drowned, you heathen oncomers!" to "Oh fuck, am I drunk? Without any alcohol, mind you? How else I missing all of these shots?" back and forth over the evening.

My friends are getting better, so I can't even survive when I'm really close to dying anymore. Something always pops up to push me over the edge.
Although, there are the few times when the incoming line warning starts and I just can't do anything except hope my opponent isn't paying attention to my screen and dies before I do. 'S fucking hilarious when I win a round that way.

Gave up on Borderlands 2. It started becoming a bit repetitive. A good friend got me Shovel Knight for PC, and i'm playing that until Pokemon ORAS comes out in a month.
Not much to add to what other posters commented in the past, it's a fun action platformer with quite an unsual "weapon".

Finished the story mode of Legasista and soloed the easiest random dungeon. My fears became true as you do need strong equipment to progress in the harder dungeons and you need to be lucky to find them.

At first I only had crap gear and needed some 50 hits to kill a lv100 enemy. Came across a spear with 200+ attack power, and with some tweaks I'm now killing them in a single hit. Shows how much difference good equipment makes.

This game is the spiritual sequel of Cladun and Cladun X2, and you can unlock the tracks from those 2 games to play in this one. And oh my God, some of them are amazing. I love this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9PQLXmLdOY

So I tried Golden Axe and II today, first impression is the games suuuck.
Maybe Beat' em ups just aren't for me. It seems in order to play the games well you have to just use exploits and really uninteresting, clinical play, whereas to progress in a shmup you're usually being badass.

In Golden Axe I feel less able to defend myself than bloody Final Fight!

Imo try playing some of the more flashy, modern beat em ups that Capcom and others produced after the genre had time to evolve. Stuff like Knights of The Round, Alien Vs Predator, Sengoku 3, etc. are all a lot more interesting then Golden Axe IMO.

Alright man I'll check them out eventually. I do like the grim fantasy visual style of G.A. though.

I did enjoy Scott Pilgrim and Castle Crashers (they have block buttons)

You might enjoy King of Dragon's, Knights of The Round, and the Dungeons and Dragon's Mystara games. None of them have dedicated block buttons (except DND if you pick Warrior), but deflecting attacks by tapping/holding back as an enemy attack launches is very fun. Especially in King of Dragon's, which despite its simplicity is very fun and easy to get into imo (just don't play wizard or elf).

Knights of The Round is fun too, a bit more advanced, but the blocking mechanic is a bit more difficult. Many attacks are a lot harder to react to, and some of the bosses are based purely on pattern (unlike KOD). It leans a bit more towards that "cynical" kind of gameplay, though it still gives you a lot of wiggle room. I recommend trying both.

What was that Capcom beat-'em-up that was one of the last ever made? It had a name like Battle Arena, and the player could choose from six-or-so characters, all with special moves that you could upgrade when a stage was completed.

Interesting how they got more and more fighting game-like near the end of their lifespan.

Played through Kingdom Hearts on 1.5 HD Remix on Proud again because 2.5 is coming out soon.

It was a very frustrating run with a lot of reloading, but I managed to meet my goal for the run.

# of heartless was obscured due to camera flash, so can't see the true number for that, but everything else on the battle report shows.

Little Racers Street

This is a fun racing game. Lots of cars and tracks. I would of paid more if I could. $1 on xblig is too little for such a fun racing game.

Cave Story+ with original graphics and music. I gather it's sped up (or the original PC version was slowed down).
King's Bounty: The Legend - more forgiving than expected, but with so much content I'm looking forward to - all the more compulsive for it.

Tales of Symphonia Chronicles on PS3

Only 3 hours in, so far I like the colorful cutesy graphics, and the combat is already more than just button mashing, which I wasn't expecting.

Wish the game came with a manual that explains more of the game mechanics, does the game introduce them gradually over the first dozen hours or so?

Tales of Eternia [PSP].

hopefully my copy doesn't have the Volt glitch [game freezes after beating Volt], dunno where I'd find one without it
would be really nice if someone made a patch or cwcheat code to fix it
Also, apparently I can read what Meredy is saying [protip: tilt the system to the right, half of the characters are now ordinary letters almost].

At the moment, I just got my face mashed in by Undine because I had fewer items than I thought [also, it would be REALLY FUCKING NICE if the AI members were smart enough to block her huge-fuck piercing attack -- I pretty much have to keep everyone behind me constantly so I can protect the party, but it does loads of chip damage still].

if I was playing on PS1, I think I could have a friend help me, dunno if it's like in Destiny where you need an item equipped to do co-op

I actually did get quite a bit further in this game [hadn't reached Volt, was in Celestia though], but I fell on my [first -- of four!] PSP and my memory card was corrupted and I didn't have a recent backup...

Blinge wrote:Castle Crashers (they have block buttons)
The block button usually causes you to get swarmed, especially in larger fights (don't try it in Insane mode!). It's handy for a few select boss attacks, but the real trick to mastering Castle Crashers is mastering long air juggles (which takes a bit of practice, helps to have a few levels in Agility, and knowing which enemies are too heavy to juggle). Maxed out Agility also makes archery totally awesome, and several characters get really useful magic abilities: Red Knight can hold down Lightning until the meter runs try, Blue gets a badass freeze effect, Sawblade magic chews up ground bosses, many characters get a guaranteed crit as part of their level 50 Magic Combo.

Golden Axe's best character is the Dwarf, IMO. His spinning back attack is surprisingly safe and abusable.

Streets of Rage Remake is a solid beat 'em up, one of my faves.

Eh, I'm done with Legasista. Since my previous post I've done no progress whatsoever, I've gone as far as I possibly could with normal equipment. To keep going I now need to go to a specific place in one of the story dungeons and destroy respawning statues for hours on end for the best gear. Either that or do the random dungeons hundreds of times hoping to find them.

Not only I have no patience for grinding anymore, but once you have the top gear you're going to one-shot pretty much everything in the game, which is also no fun. Time to move on I guess.

100% Orange Juice [PC].
I saw someone use a card that boosts their stats up with a random spread of 7 points.
and then I saw their opponent use Reverse Attribute Field, a card that reverses all stats in battle

So, I ended up seeing someone with -7 defense in a game where you roll a D6.
sadly, no one took a screenshot, it happened so quickly

KOF98 [Neo-Geo/MAME].
stopped playing 2002 because Athena is silly as fuck in that game and no one wants to play it with me because of that  [Phoenix Arrow is pretty much safe on block [and it's much safer in general], amongst other things -- all of which get fixed in 02UM, because she pretty much becomes KOF2000 Athena], waiting for 02UM to release on Steam [can't be arsed to put the PS2 version back on this machine after my HDD died], I will be extremely bothered if the 02UM port is more CPU intensive than PS2 emulation [already got burned by the fact that running SA2 on PC is more intensive than emulating the DC version -- I have a tiny ass laptop with just an i5 and no dedicated graphics so things like that matter]

I kind of forgot there's EX versions of some characters. I'm so glad I can play as EX Yuri and EX Terry. They get actual fireballs. Sure, the Kyokugen blast and Terry's 96-98 Power Wave have nice properties [notably, they have a tendency to hit when projectiles would get cancelled out, but that often results in trades], but they lack range.
oh, and non-charge Rising Tackle for normal Terry feels wrong

Having Yuri's QCB+A/B is also the best, I got used to it from playing so much 2002, this weird "I'm not Terry" Yuri is problematic.
Fireball Kyo sucks. B,D,BD+K is much better on rekka Kyo.
And if I wanted fireball Kyo, I'd just play as Iori.

Man, everyone in 98 has moves I wish they still had, why did Athena lose her command grab come 2002 and QCB+D reflect, why doesn't Terry have Power Charge anymore, Benimaru's backflip DP, etc, etc. They weren't even replaced with new moves in most cases. They simply got excised, blah.

Oh, and what is the deal with 98's airblocking? I have absolutely no idea how it works. It seems to work sometimes, and for no apparent reason.

Give the basketball dude a try. He can spam basketballs, use his dash to move across the screen, has a ridiculously long jumping kick and sweep, and his special move is a great anti-air. People would rage when I used him in the arcades.
