New monitor. Glow?
Hi all.
I just bought and set up a new 24" IPS monitor to replace my old 19" TN model. It's an ASUS VS239HV, and having spent all morning setting it up and playing on it, I'm quite happy with the quality.
The difference to my old 19" TN screen is huge, and the quality of the image is a lot better.
I get a noticeable amount of light leakage in the top right and bottom left corners though. Especially noticeable when playing older consoles, where the screen is running in 4:3 mode.
The monitor is new so I have the option of returning for a replacement, but is it worth the bother? Will I be likely to get a better sample of this screen?
With thanks,
Ant

Re: New monitor. Glow?
I have two IPS monitors and they both have significant glow in the bottom left corner. This is most likely an issue with the viewing angle; try moving your head around and see if goes away. There's a screen filter that reduces this problem significantly but manufacturers leave it out on order to keep the price low.

Re: New monitor. Glow?
Visible glow on dark areas is normal on IPS panels. You could see if placing the monitor at a higher position (i.e. looking at it from a bit below) makes it better.

Re: New monitor. Glow?
Well there's glow and leakage, two different things.
You can't do anything against glow, but when you're facing a bad case of backlight leakage of course you should return the monitor.
People who don't give a damn about warranty fix the leaks themselves, but I won't recommend that.
Unfortunately 'BLB' is more visible on IPS than on VA, the bigger overall problem being that manufacturers indeed cut costs not only on technology but also on quality control.

How can I tell the difference between glow and leakage?
The "glow" stays the same regardless of viewing angle.

Re: New monitor. Glow?
Don't remember what they say exactly but if you display a completely black screen and sit right in front from about 90cm away in a mildly-lit environment it should be obvious.
Corner glow is something you see when you're in front but really close (most of the time it's showing from all sides equally), and off-center glow obviously when you're viewing the screen from an angle, whatever the distance.
A backlight leak is something you will notice even when sitting right in front from a distance, it's like someone is aiming a flashlight at the screen from whatever side, ruining the black/dark tones in that particular area (looks like this is your problem here).
Google for 'backlight leak' and 'IPS glow' images separately, keeping in mind that pictures actually showing glow are essentially the off-center ones, you should see the difference between the two things.

Re: New monitor. Glow?
Alright that's your typical backlight leak.
If it's noticeable in normal use you might indeed want to return the monitor.
No guarantee the replacement won't have a leak too, but heh... that's how lcd's are.
(Personally I would try to fix it, but depending on how the monitor is built it can be a very delicate operation, and of course it will void the warranty)

That's a really bad case and tells a lot about their QC (or rather, lack thereof). I looked this model up and seeing the price frankly I'm not as surprised. For 139 EUR I wouldn't expect any better. Personally I'd return it ASAP and get a higher quality model.

Even monitors in the thousands can have backlight leaks, no brand guarantees there won't be any.
It's a weakness of LCD lighting technology and an industry problem as a whole, it won't get any better until self-light-emitting panels like OLED go mainstream.

For somebody who isn't actually "into" monitor specs, it can be quite difficult to find out which is a better model and which is not so desirable.Xan wrote:That's a really bad case and tells a lot about their QC (or rather, lack thereof). Picture quality and connectivity with this monitor are great, but the glow...
I got it off Amazon so will speak to them.

Re: New monitor. Glow?
You could go for a monitor with a VA panel, those are less affected by backlight leaks, but they're sometimes a bit less responsive compared to IPS (though how less is rarely noticeable unless you often play fast-paced 3D games), and the colors don't always feel as 'natural'.

Re: New monitor. Glow?
Of course nearly any LCD has it to some extent, but you can't just generalize it like that. Unless it's somehow exacerbated in the photo, the case shown here is considerably worse than what you can and should expect these days if you care about image quality. On most monitors you just see a slight brightening across the edges which isn't much of a big deal, but here it appears to be one spot that literally catches your eye.Xyga wrote:Even monitors in the thousands can have backlight leaks, no brand guarantees there won't be any.

Re: New monitor. Glow?
Well it's not that I'm generalizing but the 'bad QC' situation somehow got worse over the years, even if some brands are known to do especially bad (Dell with first production series), nothing guarantees for instance a $1000 Eizo won't show BLB (bad cases seen on hardforum recently), when you could very well receive a $140 with close to zero BLB.
It's just a feeling but sometimes I feel like maybe 2 out of 10 monitors sold, whatever the model/brand/price have bad BLB.

I've been in touch with Amazon and am returning for replacement. I explained the fault and the salesperson I spoke to said it was unlikely that my replacement would have the same fault.
We'll see, but in the meantime it's back to my TN panel, which has ZERO leakage!

Nothing in the LCD realm is more desirable than a near-perfect, balanced, and free from manufacturing flaws IPS, but it's true that those are the most difficult to find/source.

Maybe you should get a VA in the end...
I'm not saying those never suffer from BLB, only much less so than IPS.
The viewing angles are a bit narrower, but there's no fucking glow.
24" -> iiyama xb2483hsu-b1
27" -> iiyama xb2783hsu-b1
If you remove the 'b' after the 'x' it's the part numbers for the same monitors minus the rotating stand.

That Iiyama 24" looks pretty cool. Seems to have everything I need. I'd rather have no glow and less wide viewing angle as I no longer need to lean to steer my spaceships...Xyga wrote:Maybe you should get a VA in the end...

From what I read it's still the best AMVA+ 1920x1080 option, you will find a number of reviews and alternatives linked here;
http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1803228
Most are similar except that Iiyama compared to the others has slightly better colors, and slightly better/faster pixel acceleration.
Here some pictures of the 27" in action (scroll down a bit) http://forum.shmup.com/viewtopic.php?f= ... start=1230
And some opinions + overclocking tips; http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1838392
I think this is as good as AMVA+ gets at the moment, it's more reliable and comfortable compared to IPS, but you know it's not the best thing to play 'fast-moving 3D games'.
@RGB32E; Yeah more 'low/no-glow' ! Cheap !

The FG2421 is certainly the best option for me. As much as I'd like to own a PVM-A250, it's just way too expensive. Displaying PC games that can output 120fps is a really nice experience on the FG2421, and is adequate for 'fast-moving 3D games'.Xyga wrote:I think this is as good as AMVA+ gets at the moment, it's more reliable and comfortable compared to IPS, but you know it's not the best thing to play 'fast-moving 3D games'.

On paper it looks like it has what I need, and is affordable. I'll let you know how I get on with it when it arrives, hopefully in a few days.

Could very well be the best VA but it's got a bad history of quality issues; frequent backlight bleed (oddly for a VA), dead pixels, and visible cross-hatching plus gamma shift.RGB32E wrote:FG2421
Well I suppose if you get a unit with no manufacturing flaws it's still very enjoyable.
Honestly I would have bought one if I had the money and if it was bigger, but I'm broke anyway. ^^
Yeah LG are in a hurry to get first place while Samsung, Sony, Panasonic and folks patiently study means to perfect the tech and make it more cost-effective.RGB32E wrote:Xyga wrote:@RGB32E; ... http://www.lg.com/us/tvs/lg-65EC9700-oled-tvToo bad the folks over on AVS have found many issues to critique about the LG driven OLED panels including undefeatable digital noise reduction and no models with really low input lag.

Re: New monitor. Glow?
Well, the Iiyama finally arrived and I set it up last night.
I'm still getting used to the settings etc, but out of the box it seems pretty good to me! Only very very faint glow and that only in the extreme corners. Very good viewing angles, very sharp picture all the way across and up and down.
What's really impressed me though is the sturdy tate-able stand with height adjustment. This also means I can keep my TN 19" screen on its tate-able stand separately - handy for my SCART Gamecube (no SCARTS on the Iiyama).
What alos really impressed me is just how much larger the play area is on a 24" compared with 19". Everything is so much clearer and more detailed. I actually played a few games of Raiden II and found it to seem easier than on the smaller screen - I think my high-scores are going to be helped by the larger screen.
The manual is a bit useless and I'm just picking things up as I go along. If anyone can suggest some "ideal" setings or adjustments to make I'd appreciate it, but for now, as is, it's great!
Pictures will follow, once I can get some decent ones!

According to this review and if google translate is 'correct' (lol) http://www.overclockers.ru/lab/58197/Re ... 83HSU.html
they had the most accurate colors and gamma in 'text' mode (but as always things may vary between units, and people don't necessary like the most accurate colors for entertainment).
The optimal overdrive setting should be '1' but you should try them all and see for yourself with time.
