Hammer Away PROTO found!

Post by _rm_ »

Me and a couple of friends discovered this lost Sega tate Shmup.

My friend opened a thread @Neo Geo http://www.neo-geo.com/forums/showthrea ... ost3807827

Feel free to ask any questions

Awesome. If it has a suicide battery like most Sega boards, you better get it to someone who can dump the encryption keys ASAP.

Great opening sequence with the individual frames of the drawing of the gun.

Do not worry about that. I assume that due to the fact this is a Proto/unreleased game it never got encrypted.

To test it (the main board is completely destryed) i had to use another System 18 board, remove the encrypted processor and replace it with a regular M68000, after this you just plug in the ROM board and you are good to go. The ROM board is all EPROM's, there are no Mask roms as usual. here is a picture:

Wow! & You had to do some fancy work to get it running too. Nice!

I have Sega's Sonic Boom board. That has to be pretty rare.

What caught my eye was the "Santos" name on the title screen - I never knew the Airgrave/Stahlfeder guys (assuming this is the same company) ever did anything else besides Tripuzz, and going by the date they were in business a good deal longer than I thought they were.

Wow, that's interesting, i know nothing about "Santos". The only thing that intrigued us is that "Santos" is a very common name in Portugal and Brazil, so we thought that a Brazilian company could have something to do with it.

But all the game text (exept "credits", "score", ect) is in Japanese.

Edit- Just watched the video and there are some similarities in some of the enemies.
Wait a bit longer for my gameplay video and you take your own conclusions...

Hmm, it looks almost like a 2D Under Defeat, not only with the tilting mechanic but the way your gun looks different when attacking ground targets.

I'm not sure if you can tell by the video, but you have 3 action buttons:
"A" attacks air enemies; "B" attacks ground enemies (auto-fire always enabled) and "C" is the bomb.

Hmm, in that respect it skews closer to the Xevious model then, not too surprising considering its age.

The guys who found this were kind enough to send me the dumps to pass along to the relevant people, really unusual to see a new shmup discovered so late in the day.

Me and a couple friends (Atro and 1up from the neo geo forums) visited a warehouse that looked like an Arcade graveyard. Some of the boards have been exposed to rain, there was rats excrements all over the place, really nasty, lol.

The board was tested and was completely dead, and obvious we were unable to identify it, i even thought that it could be some kind of conversion made by Sega like Capcom south America used to do to their boards.

The user 1up decided to buy it for parts anyway (he is the owner) and gave it to me so i could try to bring it back to life somehow using one of my System 18 boards.

And this was the result 8)

Correction, get back to that warehouse and see what else is hiding!

Good work chaps.

Would really like to know how this was found in Portugal - maybe Sega was doing a kind of location testing?

here are some shots of this game running in MAME

note, presentation appears a bit different to the version with screenshots on the unmamed site

the text under the title (developer info) is in the gfx roms, but not displayed with this set, nor is the title screen background ever blank. I think this might be a newer build than the one shown there.

Also, what was said above, what we've typically found is that where one rare / unreleased game is found there are often more, or at least unreleased versions of already known games, might be worth seeing if there's anything else there that can be salvaged for checking.

i already visited the place in the past, around 2 years ago, but this time we had 6 eyes looking around and we checked every box and every cabinet.

this was a small op but the board came from an old and big (back in the day) op. They are already closed though...

Would it be okay in asking which city was this found?
