FINALLY!!! I've been waiting for so long...

Has anyone tried this yet? Does it work on an Everdrive or Powerpak?

BTW, these aren't really supposed to be KKKLansman are they?

I figure it had more to do with the Buddhist reverse swastika and coincidence of the costume, but you never know with 80s era Japanese games (Square's Tom Sawyer anyone?)

Halloween is Friday. Still have quite a few games left to go...

I'd guess it's just a ghost with a manji on its head, which of course inverts depending which way it's facing. Although you can never tell with Konami! Got such a laugh the first time I saw Gradius Gaiden's Laser Tetran firing its manji before promptly reversing direction and busting out the swastika.

Image

Coincidentally was playing Top Secret the other night, surely the FC game with the most swastikas per byte. On flags, uniforms, stamped into metal sheeting and carved into stone - you want Nazi, Capcom delivers!

I once saw a Japanese guy dressed up in full replica (real?) Nazi uniform complete with combat boots and Hitler haircut and mustache. He was walking around Tokyo.

Splatterhouse Wanpaku Graffiti down.

My favorite part in the entire game aside from the shotgun physics is this vending machine.

I still stand behind what I said earlier in this thread though. The game is way too easy. I hadn't played it in 7 years and 1cc'd it on the 3rd try. It's also not just easy after you figure everything out. There is almost nothing to figure out. The last boss can be beat the very first fight--2 tries tops.

Still a fun Halloween play-through, but it's really overrated in that it is usually in the top 5-10 Famicom imports people suggest.

The remake of Megami Tensei 1+2 for the SNES got translated, so at least you still have this.

I totally think the guys in white hoods are supposed to be the KKK. They show up in the Game Boy sequel as well, with their grand wizard tagging along, impervious to direct attack (presumably due to the power of RACISM), but ultimately self-defeating. It just goes with the weird vibe of these titles.

The only mystery is why they're after Kid Dracula. He's hella pale.

More likely, they're Buddhist ghosts. In Japan, the association of white hoods and robes with the KKK is an obscure bit of foreign history that the designers were almost certainly unaware of.

Lagrange Point is awful, IMO. It'd be consigned to the landfill of history if not for the VRC7.

Why? Details, please? I mean, there's some pretty bad RPGs for the NES out there, and from what I can see, it actually looks pretty decent.

So I had originally intended to start Red Arremer II / Gargoyle's Quest II about a week ago as part of my Halloween playlist. Got a bit sidetracked, but I have been giving it a shot tonight and I'm pretty impressed.

Generally, I am not a huge fan of green-gobliny-monsterish-fantasy type stuff. Despite hearing the name a ton back in the day, this game series was pretty far off my radar because of my distaste for the theme. Given that this was on BIL's extremely well curated list of FC/NES must haves, I figured Halloween would be a good time to try it.

Very unique control scheme. The graphics almost feel 16 bit to me--particularly the over world parts. Some extremely good use of palettes, and even the opening Capcom indent and title screen at power on seemed really impressive for an Nintendo 8 Bit game.

It's been a bit of a learning curve as far as the controls, but nothing too frustrating so far. Hopefully, I can get through this one.

This is the second time recently that I have found 2 amazing games with themes that stopped me from giving them a try initially (Batman being the other one). Live and learn.

It's been years since I played it and I don't intend to replay it any time soon, but it was basically just a poor retread of the already-average Phantasy Star 2: similar aesthetic, similar plot/narrative beats, but with the added problem of irritating save point placement, ugly/ridiculous enemy sprites, needlessly large areas that didn't give you anything to find and only served to slow you down, etc. I do remember appreciating the auto-battle feature, but I'd much rather the battles were actually fun to begin with.

I suppose it's not "awful" relative to some of the garbage that passed for RPGs back then--STED: Iseki Wakusei no Yabou springs to mind, good lord is that game painful--but even the good FC RPGs weren't especially fun, so why bother with a mediocre one?

whoa, lagrange point translation

insert dots here

can people start using the german term for the symbol when talking about the german usage of the symbol? also i'm not sure there's any need for demarcation as far as facing goes; i'm sure it's been drawn both faces and in all kinds of rotations in both cultures billions of times

rng is ok when every pattern gives you a real chance to dodge it

anyway G.I. JOE: THE ATLANTIS FACTOR yeah whoo

Patchy, you great big pedant, the symbol as used by Nazi Germany is obviously associated with a particular orientation. Hint it's not this one

These developers have enough knowledge of Americana to play around with it, like when KD competes with one of the white-robed guys on a game show hosted by the Statue of Liberty. She's not supposed to be a Buddhist nun, is she? And having swastikas on the hood is just close enough to being wrong. Some KKKers do wear that mark, but it's not key to the stereotypic outfit. It makes sense to me that a person from an Asian culture would add the extra hate symbol, while someone from the US would be more likely to just draw the hoods and robes and expect the audience to recognize them.

What Buddhist ghosts look like this, anyway? I wouldn't be surprised if something similar was dug up, but the typical pop culture depictions of pretas and such look very different.

I think you're right, but I'm not following the argument. If there is anything I know from Pixiv, it's that every American has gigantic tits, blue eyes, and blond hair (even the guys...); at the beach you must wear the stars and stripes. The Statue of Liberty isn't even off the boat, man, and that's a pretty much universally understood symbol of Americana, up there with Unca Scrooge McDuck and bald eagles swooping in to steal your hot dog.

Ghost Klansmen is followed by a wizard or something right? Doubt that's a coincidence.

Yeah, tho the Buddhist Statue of Liberty - that's something I want to see, plus some old guy running around in the streets yelling about the fifth columnists losing the war and the Queen's English.

Agreed, too easy of a game Still not bad for $25 that I paid on it.

In other news Guevara/Guerrilla War is still kicking my butt. Now that was a $35 well spent on a cart.

I also recently 1CC Zanac on the FDS with 40 extra lives. In my opinion you play Compile shooter not for 1CC but more for a score fest. It is a fiesta yo.

Near the beginning of the game there's a long fire pit that has to be crossed in a specific fashion or it instakills you. Aside from that, the game's learning curve is reasonably smooth and you should progress pretty quickly - being disappointingly short is the game's biggest shortcoming, really. I got through it in an afternoon, which was a little surprising given its RPG bent and the fact that it's a GnG spinoff.

Yeah, it's been difficult enough to keep it interesting without frustrating me too much. I feel like I'm getting close and should beat it tonight.

I posted the US title screen above, but it's missing the animated fire and lightening flashes that the Japanese title screen displays. Guess that was way too satanic for big N.

Interesting that the JP version doesn't have "The Demon Darkness" on the title screen since that's the subtitle used for the JP only GB counterpart, if I remember correctly.

The GB game was definitely released in the US. Its subtitle is just "Makaimura Gaiden" which was dropped from the sequel, presumably because once Red Arremer got a sequel it was its own series and no longer considered just a side story entry.
