480p/i on LCDs: native resolution vs upscaling

Post by eadmaster »

to play old videogame consoles like the N64, Wii, PS2, etc. (which can output 480p/i only)
Is it generally better to use:
1. an old LCD with a native 640x480 resolution (eg. Sony Bravia KDL-20G2000)
2. recent 1080p widescreen LCD (like LG M2450D)

I know that with 1. there will be less lag since no upscaling is performed.
But i am not sure about the image quality:
1. will look more "blocky/pixelated/sharp"
2. will look less pixelated due to the upscaline

I never had experience with a native 640x48 LCD and i fear it looks too pixelated, so i am definitively more inclined to recent LCDs...

Nothing proves a 640x480 display will necessarily be faster than a 1920x1080 one.

- Many displays have a significant level of input lag even at native resolution, you cannot be 100% sure of how many milliseconds until properly tested.
- 480i on a 640x480 display still requires deinterlacing, and unless it's done the single-field way (like the old XRGB's do) you can bet a million bucks there will be significant lag.

Also, all those 640x480 TVs are old and early LCD panels, mostly TN, with poor colors, poor contrast, poor viewing angles and very slow pixel response times.

Current LCD's are all significantly superior (except those featuring a TN panel of course).

The best solution for most 480i only 3D games is the 480i field doubling mode featured on the XRGB-3 and similar scalers. I'd recommend an XRGB with adjustable scanlines since much like 240p scanlines, they improve image quality by masking defects somewhat and creating faux detail. It all depends on the title, though. Sometimes forcing 480p can yield amazing results (Gradius V, Fatal Frame 2).

I often prefer the XRGB3's 480i field doubling to forcing 480p or emulating with a high end PC with higher resolutions and post processing! That's not to say the image's perfect, it's not - it soft and slightly blurry and I wouldn't recommend playing on anything bigger than 27" unless you're sitting far from the display. Other than a CRT, It's simply the best out of all available options at the current time.

And obviously, if we're talking about 480i 2D titles I'd recommend forcing 240p for upscaler use, or a 480p/SLG combo.
