4D UHD retro dual play

Post by beast »

Hi, im new. My Shmup credentials are fairly poor, Mars Matrix and Ikaruga being the highlights. I remeber Einhänder by square being mind blowing and, as of late, Sine Mora is fun. Recently dled Nano Assault EX but am waiting on a circle pad pro. Does Liberation Maiden or Rez count? I am also very bad at most of these games.

It is hard to find a forum with a good mix of retro, last gen, current gen and hardware , so here I am.

Enough introductioning.

Understanding that retro is best served via CRT or with a side of framemeister; this post is about newer passive 3D tvs in 1080p or 4k and whole screen, split screen aka (LG) dual play.

Dual play is a trademark name for a LG tecnology, but this can be done by any passive 3D television with use of special passive 3d glasses that have 2 left or two right lenses.( Sony has an active 3d version called simulveiw but as far as I know that requires extra programing in the game software, it also gives me a headache). Both of these technologies take a split screen game and give each player use of the full screen. Is this commonly called dual play or is there a generic name for the tech (ex.kleenex vs tissue paper).

In passive 3D televisions this mode halves the resolution on one plane making the image 1920x540 or 970x1080 respectively for horozontal or vetrical splits. This introduces stretching and jagged lines, there is also a brightness decrease. There may also be issues with aspect ratios as 4:3 obviously has black edges and may not overlap properly.

I have read recently that 4k passive 3D has less issues as 4k TVs are 3840 x 2160 or 4096 x 2160 (the standard has yet to be ratified) leaving plenty of resolution for modern and future games. It is also said to reduce crosstalk dramatically, brightness is less of an issue as well.

While some info for dual play with modern systems is available info on retro systems is scant.

240p > 1080p > 4096x2190 > 4096x1080 = input lag?
SNES > Frameister > 4kTV > Dual Play = who knows?

I have never used dual play and had limited use of simulveiw as the games catalog is small.

Has anyone here done testing with a dualplay setup incorporating a xrgb-mini or the like?

Is stretching a limitation of the technology regardless of resolution?

Could golden eye be played 4 player with each player getting a half screen?

Twinkle Star Sprites?Spy vs Spy NES? Pikman 2?

To my understanding any split screen game will work... but how well does it work?

Possibly I have missed an exhaustive post on the subject or am in the wrong place, if either is true please direct me and I will be on my way.

Edit: I am just learning and there is alot to take in.

Seems 4k has ridiculous lag times and LG seem worse than others.

Not to mention lcd screens native resolution...not sure how this effects things yet.

I am caught, it seems, between needing a new TV and wanting to future proof with out comprimising the past.

I was on the fence about a st60 but it did not have the passive 3d I think I want, now I find out it has horrid lag...seems PQ ain't everything.

Jumping in to the deepend maybe is not the best thing but I really dont want to get a $1000+ tv just to have it suck. I own 5 consoles that I am interested in moding and am trying to collect more, I thought the display was a logical start point. Entertainment is 50/50 gaming and movies so comprimises must be made I suppose.

I am trying to get help while showing I am doing my due dilegence. I have so many questions. The whole thing is rather daunting.

Sorry, im rambling.

Maybe this should have been posted in "questions that dont deserve threads".
