Who would've thought that old oil cans are such great examples of modernist graphic design!

Does it ever make you think?

Here are all these people with mint edition albums and sports cards in plastic cases, and god knows what else valuable and collectible.

...and they're dead anyway.
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

Look at the history of sold items rather than currently for sale prices. I've owned records that where priced on discogs for ~$1200 if we're keeping score.

Tell tale sign winter is approaching.. hardly any sales this weekend, but did manage to find a rare Johnson Outboard 2 cycle motor oil tin for $2.00
Anyone know the year ? Im thinking early 1970's ? Theres no UPC barcode number. (The first UPC marked item ever scanned at a retail checkout was at the Marsh supermarket in Troy, Ohio on June 26, 1974, and was a 10-pack (50 sticks) of Wrigley's Juicy Fruit chewing gum)

Some serious pack rat tendencies on exhibition here. Not everything from a bygone era has collectible value.

But seriously, oil cans from the 1970s? Isn't it a risk to have these containers of toxic, combustible fluid lying around, that may not still be secure after so many years? You can't use them either, as they no longer conform to modern standards for motor oil and the additives have likely degraded.

Keep at it long enough and you'll end up on an episode of Hoarders.

That old car you Ebay'd looks like the rarest thing you found, yet no bids.

Feels.

ya, thats why I sold it today to a local buyer.
I made $70 selling stuff I only paid $5.00 for. :)

No ones buying collectibles these days unless they are hardcore wealthy collectors looking for the pristine stuff !

I think Rob actually runs a clean ship compared to most of us, and he seems to have a few niches carved out.

Yeah, the motor oil stuff...well, I don't feel alarm so much as a mixture of alarm and admiration. There is definitely something neat about seeing these packages after so many years - but I do agree that most of the contents are probably expensive to dispose of properly. Hard to say though - I think many of these products are from a time of somewhat simpler oil / grease design, just as we've seen with gasolines that now all have huge amounts of detergent and other additives that make even the lowest grade of mom'n'pop's gas safe for exclusive use in all but the most demanding exotic. The safety and stability of old oils...I dunno, in general it's a good idea to keep that stuff away from people.

That latest oil gun tube (the Johnson outboard two-cycle oil)...that's a work of art.

I would definitely have passed on the cassettes though, especially the one for $1. I've been doing that for a while.

Recently I picked up some old cameras, myself...got a nice 50mm f/1.4 SMC Takumar (Pentax) that I need to give the old Ultraviolet.

oil cans and oil company advertising is pretty widespread collectible. Definitely a niche but not so weird as people are making it out here.

However, if it's anything like soda / beer can collecting, most people tend to drain the contents.

The market for Petroliana is usually found in the older 50+ year older buyer.
The younger people 20-40 usually buy video games.
Im 35 and I dont collect video games anymore... unless I spot a mint in box NES game or system :)
