I just found out that nec makes several large screen 32 inch and up lcd displays that are 15khz rgb capable. they are commercial grade.
are these any good for classic gaming?
one model is the nec multisync V551. It has RGBHV inputs on it and a special mode for 4:3 use.

Re: nec multisync v551
I got a NEC public display (P402). It only accepts 480i, or at the very least I wasn't able to get 240p working on it. 480i also looks really bad on it without an external deinterlacer to do the job.

Re: nec multisync v551
thanks for the answer, ryu. So with that said, what would be the advantage to having one of these monitors? are they a lot better than a standard flat screen when using true hd sources?
so why would they even bother with the rgbhv Inputs then? arent most rgb sources that would connect through the BNC setup 15 khz low res sources?
i already have a sony pvm on my bench and a 32" wega with component transcoder in the other room. both look awesome with old consoles.
it still would be nice to find 1 new lcd that works good with 240p sources though.
i guess ill just end up buying an x-rgb-3. but since i dont have an HDTV for myself I figured id skip that step and just buy a good display in the first place.

A cheap way to tick a box for any purchasing agent. "It works with our old equipment, so let's get it!"mvsfan wrote:so why would they even bother with the rgbhv Inputs then?
Sounds like it's targeted, barely, at legacy setups. Not really a lot of care going into it, looks like.

that makes sence ed. I guess the xrgb or framemeister really are the best solution for a non crt setup since thats what they are made for.
probably much better than anything i could find built into the lcd.

Re: nec multisync v551
Honestly, I can't say. If you were asking for specifically the model I own I could say the low input lag is an advantage. My P402 has an average lag of 4ms (at least on the DVI input I think). My model also came with a non-reflective panel coating which is always nice.what would be the advantage to having one of these monitors?
In terms of picture quality? I doubt it. My P402 has really good color accuracy and I never saw a tint that gave me the urge to fine tune the color settings, but for the price I paid that was more or less expected.are they a lot better than a standard flat screen when using true hd sources?
Just to support older equipment. But you're right, however 480i signals are specced at 15khz just as 240p.so why would they even bother with the rgbhv Inputs then? arent most rgb sources that would connect through the BNC setup 15 khz low res sources?
Unless you can get one of these displays for really cheap, I see no legit reason to take one over a Sony TV. See the W6 series thread for some proper recommendations on LCDs suited for gaming.
But yeah you won't get around using external equipment like the XRGB if you want to use an LCD for low res gaming.

Btw, did sony ever make an SD 60hz 40" wega? all of the flat screen crt 40s i find on craigslist turn out to be hd xbr models.

Re: nec multisync v551
No, Sony didn't. They did make some really large consumer "PVM" with Trinitron branding back around 1993 - forget how big it is, but I've linked details on the forum before, somewhere. At that age it would certainly be a 4:3 SDTV (though I think it supported higher resolutions, as I've seen reference to people using them for PC use).
40" or so seems to be about as big as CRT TVs ever got. Beyond that and you're looking at CRT rear projectors or three-tube projectors - both of which might be decent enough for gaming use actually.

Re: nec multisync v551
Ed - Pvm3230 i believe is the big sd pvm.
for a 32 though i think most people would rather just have an inexpensive wega with component.
i was asking about a 40" because its considerably larger than the 32 i have right now. 40 is the biggest crt sony ever made, but as i was finding out, they are all 100 hz hd models.

No. I managed to find a reference to it again -mvsfan wrote:Ed - Pvm3230 i believe is the big sd pvm.

As the quote says, it was essentially a promotional piece with an extremely low run in numbers and not obviously targeted for professional applications. Given the age it was certainly SD capable of course.I can confirm that it was the Sony PVM-4300U. It was a 43" direct-view Trinitron tube. I have the service manual on it, and I've actually seen 3 of them in person. Eric is correct; they weren't "really" for sale to the public. Circuit City had one in West Los Angeles, with a price tag of $39,995.00. The two that were on eBay belonged to the late collector and our friend, Gary Inkman or Garden Grove, CA. I believe those in fact were two of the three that Circuit City had on display.
Was wrong about the date though - this article gives it as 1990 (I wondered why I kept seeing that date popping up).

Re: nec multisync v551
i was just reading that the sony hi-scan 4:3 models are ok for retro gaming. they work like a tri-sync monitor instead of upscaling everything like a true hd-sony would.
thats great news. it looks like i could buy an xbr800 40" flat screen crt and use it.
some people dont really like flat screens ive heard but i prefer them.
Im after the largest 4:3 sony i could find thats not too old as well.
i know it will be a bear to lift though. my 32" is heavy.
