How DID the first Raiden do so well?

In my first language, "Raiden" reads exactly the same as it sounds in Japanese*), so it's been a no-brainer at least since Mortal Kombat.

*) At least when they pronounce clean "r".
The rear gate is closed down
The way out is cut off

Now that you mention it, doesn't MK actually say "Ray"-den when you choose him from the roster? I believe it does.
