Question about upscaler connections?

Post by ventaak »

I'm a total noob, so bare with me.

Not too long ago, I decided to start collecting PSOne games that I owned in my youth. So I bought a PSOne off eBay and when I hooked it up to my 32" LCD through composite/AV, it looked like ass. I then got some S-Video cables and set my TV to 4:3. While the image does look vastly superior to composite, after reading about the XRGB Mini and seeing images/videos of how nice games can look, I'm seriously considering buying one.

Though, I was wondering. How do I connect my U.S. PSOne to it?

From what I read, there's I would need an SCART cable which comes in Japanese and European varieties? Once I connect the SCART to the PSOne, do I connect it straight to the XRGB Mini, or does it require some sort of converter box in between the two?

You could even use your existing S-Video cable, but RGB is recommended (makes a big difference on the PS1 especially). You should be able to get all the necessary cabling from ebay (SCART->mini-DIN adapter, SCART RGB cables for your consoles). Just don't use the supplied JP21 adapter with SCART cables.

I really would recommend asking here before buying any RGB cable.

There's a lot of room for confusion with different regions of cables and different regions of consoles, hardware, etc.

You'll just need a XRGB-mini and a cable. A JP 21 pin cable.

Not exactly but as already stated...

So it would be more correct to state that there are European SCART RGB cables and Japanese JP-21 RGB cables that use the same physical 21-pin connectors but not the same pin-out. So SCART really refers to the European version and has nothing to do with the Japanese version and there are cheap SCART cables that don't wire RGB video but only composite video (technically they should not claim to be "SCART RGB").

Like this: Retro Console Accessories: Sony Playstation PS1 PS2 PS3 XRGB JP-21 pin RGB sync-on-luma cable

AND NOT THIS: Retro Console Accessories: Sony Playstation PS1 PS2 PS3 SCART RGB sync-on-luma cable

BUT Micomsoft included a JP-21 RGB to Mini-DIN-8 adapter for the sake of the domestic Japanese market. In the global market a SCART RGB to Mini-DIN-8 adapter makes more sense.
Retro Console Accessories: Micomsoft XRGB Mini Passive adapter for Euro SCART to XRGB Mini 8 pin
Retro Gaming Cables: European SCART to Framemeister XRGB Mini Converter adapter

So if you you are only ever going to use the XRGB-Mini with that PS One then just buy that one JP-21 RGB cable (which is available right now - availability comes and goes).

If you are going to acquire additional RGB-capable consoles then you should put some thought into whether you are going to standardize on SCART RGB or JP-21 RGB cabling. JP-21 RGB can work especially if you are always going to source custom made cables. However in my experience it is typically simpler to find SCART RGB cables - which in itself isn't always simple especially if you are looking for good quality cables.

SCART RGB to JP-21 RGB converters are also available:
