The PCE-CD version of Gradius II is actually better than the arcade.

I'll have to give that one a try. I actually like Gradius II a lot, but it definitely has some issues holding it back.

How about some objectivity. If Toaplan were crap, why did Seibu entirely rip off their games for Raiden?

I didn't play it in the arcades, but from what I've seen for years, the graphics stood out most. As a lad I'd have possibly found it more visually attractive than shmups in generic "military" colours.
Can't think of many other arcade shmups looking this gaudy: Shienryu, Sengoku Ace, Ordyne... That's about it.

I never said Toaplan was crap. I said TRUXTON was crap. Seibu were just taking Toaplan's ideas and improving them to levels much better than what Toaplan could do.

No, I agree. I think the toothpaste laser is really underrated in effectiveness.

I am never sure. I think you really have to loop it around to get maximum damage output. It certainly is one of the most visually striking weapons imo.

Yes, I've always been curious about it's mathematical generation. A Bezier curve perhaps? But sometimes it looks like a concatenation of curves.

Raiden II Toothpaste laser was the first time I really noticed slowdown in an arcade game, back in the day. So that could be an advantage in a game this fast paced.

The lightning weapon of Shienryu effectively is the bishop laser, just different-looking. Shienryu is something of a Raiden played in some wild dream.

I guess you never played Flying Shark back then? The slowdown is massive!

Back to the topic of sound, I think I figured it out, the origins of the song Gallantry, as well as other Raiden tracks that sound EXTREMELY similar to other game songs. Here are all the songs that are suspiciously similar.

Space Harrier Theme (1985) Pay attention starting at 2:04  : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_Tam9lv1KQ
Hellfire- Stage 4 (1989): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3EzVO7CJUc
Fire Shark- Stage 1 (1989): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-vHXCbOZyI
Raiden- Gallantry (September 1990): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XH2Rk7csm8g
Radar Mission- Game B (October 1990) Starting right at 0:21: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcXM9K7p9OA
Raiden DX- Gallantry (1994): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3EgBk9fiNI

Flying Shark- Stage 2 (1987): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXJNFqREeMc
Truxton- Stage 1 (1988): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjuWpzKt5QQ
Raiden- Lightning War (1990): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMjR7KIB ... eT&index=3

Astyanax- Stage 1 (1989): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9D-LXjKVe8
Raiden II- Stage 7 (1993): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2W2LAFl ... wv5Xo29Hgt

Castlevania- Vampire Killer (1986): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0AZ5XZHIDh0
Raiden III- Electric Resistance (2005): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meM9BvVuxuk

Tales of Phantasia- Fighting of the Spirit (1995): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bF_T1FplLCk
Raiden III- Dawn of Sorrow (2005): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qwAfp1o020

Sonic and Knuckles- Mid-boss (1994): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCeKq3cPwj8
Raiden IV- Can't Retrace (2007): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7ZCBgCnOJ8

On a side note, there is no way that the Castlevania references in Raiden III are just a coincidence. A song that sounds almost exactly like a Castlevania song, AND the fact that stage 3's song is called Dawn of Sorrow, just like Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow. I'm pretty sure that was intentional.

Unfortunately no  . My first experience with (arcade) Flying Shark came much later, which I'll never forget since I got to watch a guy loop it before I had a chance to play.

But seriously Fox Pilot, you can't just piss on Truxton because you think Raiden is the greatest thing to ever bless the human race. That's like saying Super Mario Bros. was crap because Super Mario Bros. 3 was considered much better; just because SMB 3 was a better game doesn't mean that the original was bad.

My god, now that you mention it I'm pretty sure Bob wrote this whole thing. I wouldn't have noticed, I read everything in the Thunder Dragon II's announcer voice, or Zing Zing Zip's when I've had a few too many.

Fire! Fire! Fire! And don't stop firing are the only instructions you need. Because in this Doomsday extravaganza, there's little time for thinking. A killer instinct is all that matters. To begin this all-out mega-war, press the START button rookie.

Raiden is just the best name for a shmup. I dare you challenge it.
Nope! didn't think so. So the name attracts all kinds of gamers, some gamers will really like this shmup.
I really don't like the grayish color scheme and the art style of the first one. I mean, it is a good quality game, just doesn't look very appealing/Japanese. The slow ship movement drives me nuts.
