Why Do Superplay Recordings use JAP Rom version of the game
Hi,
Just wondering, I noticed that Superplays tend to use the Japanese Rom Version of the game, when it comes to recording your footage playing the game.
Is there a particular reason that the US Rom version (Or other versions) is not used?
Also, does it matter in the end?
I gather this includes World record attempts too? I was just curious about the reasoning behind it.
On a side note... what is the criteria for world record attempt (that is recorded) done on mame? do you use a special version of mame and record it a special way?
Thanks in advance

Re: Why Do Superplay Recordings use JAP Rom version of the g
Generally it's for two reasons. The first and most important is that the game was developed in Japan, and thus that's probably what the game was designed to be played as. Other revisions commonly change game parameters, and those are usually post-development decisions for marketing. The second reason is most superplayers are Japanese themselves, so it's what they can find.
Generally the "WR people" is Arcadia, and I believe they only accept scores done in game centers in Japan. You will not be able to get a record listing from them if you do not play on a real PCB in a real arcade. Most record places generally only accept PCB anyways. MAME is highly inaccurate in many cases, so it puts players on uneven playing grounds.

I don't think Arcadia even claims to be a global WR authority, it simply publishes verified high scores from Japanese game centers. It's just that in 99% of cases those happen to be the best scores overall.
E: To clarify, the question for other standards simply isn't very relevant as long as the players who submit to Arcadia dominate the scene so completely. Thus there are no generally accepted standards for competitive MAME scores.

Many (if not most) non-Japanese versions have altered difficulty, dumbed-down gameplay, removed/censored in-game contents, etc.

because Japan is the land of the STG, deal with it

On the speedrun side of things, I typically hear that people use Japanese versions because it tends to take less time to go through text in Japanese than it does in US versions.

Why is it you bold every other word in your post? It kind of makes it read like you have Tourette's syndrome.
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.
An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.
Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

What people have already said, plus the Japanese versions of Japanese games, being the earliest versions, often have glitches present that are fixed for international release. These are often exploitable for faster times etc.

As already said, non-japanese version often have altered difficulty. Examples : Dodonpachi, Progear, Gigawing (if not mistaken).
Also that bolding thing reminds me of my childhood. Remember Picsou/Scrooge McDuck :

Dont know if words were also bolded in english version though.

US comics bold the words all the time. That gets on my nerves.
(Another custom specific to US comics industry is putting speech balloons on cover artwork.)

Whoa! So many replies!
Thanks for all the answers, and explaining them in detail.
Tell you the truth, I wasn't expecting others to hate my 'bolding' of words. I assure you, it wasn't to indicate to say that word loudly or as if it had an exclamation point. It also wasn't done to annoy anyone or intentionally make it difficult to read.
The reason I do this, is that often, I write in detail for something that really can be said in a few words, or a sentence. If you want an example, just look at this very post.
As a result, I often hate reading my own posts, simply because if I read the entire thing, it will take ages. I do sometimes write, in even more detail than this post.
So I bold the main bits so I can speed read easier and faster. However out of courtesy I haven't here.
Hope this helps.

I know it has been forever, but rather than start a new thread and begin to make the forum untidy, I just had one more follow up question.Vargus wrote:Hi,

I wanted to know that back-in-the-day with arcade games originally made by us companies, in those situations, if someone were to do superplay or speedrun would the us rom be used instead of the jap rom?

Most high scorers live in Japan I would assume. Its the epicenter of STG buzz.
If you want to beat them, your going to have to use their tech.

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Re: Why Do Superplay Recordings use JAP Rom version of the g
There's no real reason to use any particular rom version. Some/most games have a "recommended" version to use for competitive purposes, but you can use any version you want as long as you make note of what version you're using. For scoring purposes, some rom sets will require their own scoreboard due to gameplay differences, but some won't as they are basically the same game. If you're looking at a particular game, do a little research to see if there are any documented differences and if there is a preferred version or preferred settings for organized competition. Most scoreboards here will note that info in the first post, just so everyone is on the same page.

Yeah I knew that you had to mention what version you are using, along with that there was a particular version that usually is the standard for 'records' of sortsbrokenhalo wrote:There's no real reason to use any particular rom version. I agree research is crucial, but thanks for the reminder.
Appreciate the info you provided, so thanks again for that.
