Even non players I know of look at them and people who play them with this mix of curiosity and respect. I frequent LAN parties and take a copy of something random with me like DoDonPachi 5. I HOPE for people to want to join in, but they usually just sit and watch "this crazy ass Galaga".
Yup, pretty much my experience too. Most non dude-bros seem to have a healthy respect for "retro games" and whatnot these days, even if they aren't dedicated to them.

I had a wonderful experience with one of those "FPS Graphic gamer" kind of peoples.

He walked over and saw me playing Progear, and for some reason expressed some interest in it, so I asked him if he'd like to try it.

So he did, and he died in about 30 seconds. Then i showed him how to use the bombs and two firing modes, and he lasted half the stage. I showed him how to prioritize/position against enemies, and he made it to the boss. Then I showed him how to position his fingers to move smoothly, and he almost beat the boss. Finally I showed him methods to dodge several kinds of bullet patterns, and he finally beat the stage. He played a bit through the next one too, but he gave up and said that he would try it later. (Ya know, if only it had better graphics )

haha, I usually just say, "check this shit out" and get the same reaction. just recently one of my buddies started getting into cave shmups which is nice.. since he was mostly a diehard ikaruga fan before that and now he's finally "getting" other games.

To my COD-FIFA playing gamer friends shmups are just another one of those weird Japanese games I'm known to like, Deadly Premonition was the first game I lent out and permanently coloured their impression of my tastes.

To non gamers it's a bit better, if they disapprove when I mention I'm a gamer, I say I play old arcade games like space invaders & pac man which tend to be thought better of since they either played them as a kid in the arcades or on the phone and can relate to them better than a 10 hour FPS.
