Keep or sell a Sigma Raijin? Please help me to decide...

Post by Antiriad »

Hi,
I'd really like to hear your opinion...

Actually I have a Sigma Raijin Supergun, and I really like the arcade gaming.
But I'm seriously evaluating the possibility to sell the Sigma Raijin and to buy a small supergun (like the MAK Strike or Smallcab) or even to abandon the arcade gaming at all (really).

The problem is, well, space (in the sense of "room") and setup.

Sigma Raijin is great, probably one of the best supergun ever made, but being a single piece it is inconvenient to use and position. Even the "proprietary" Jamma loom that I have is short.
Here there is a temporary set-up that I had some time ago:

Image

As you can see a lot of room is required for all the components (imagine it connected to a bigger JAMMA board...) to the point that perhaps it is more convenient to have an arcade cabinet (that I don't want!).

I'm in a new house now and I'd like to find a solution to take up less space as possible, and at the same time not to be forced to reconnect everything from scratch. This is the starting point, an IKEA Borgsjo:

I could sell the Sigma Raijin and put a mini supergun + power supply + JAMMA PCB down on the left, but I would avoid the risk of spending more money etc.

I realize this might seem like a stupid issue, but seriously prevents me from enjoying what I have already... so, any ideas or suggestions?

Thank you very much.

As long as you take care of it, you'll never have an issue selling the Raijin. So may as well wait until you are 100% sure. The Raijin's size also makes it ideal for customization. I use one exclusively for LS-30 rotary sticks.

I agree the Raijin isn't the most convenient but essentially because of that annoying short proprietary jamma cable.

Keep in mind that if you can find or build an extension, most of the annoyance will be gone.

It's indeed one of the best '2p panel-type' superguns in existence, so selling it means parting with a really fine piece of hardware that you won't be able to purchase again easily if you end up having regrets.

I think you will seriously regret replacing this with a smaller SG.

As you say, one of the best out there!

Cheers,

Ralph.

I have a sega blast city MAK and.. similar problem. I do not use SEGA too often. 2P panel is bulky...
I prefer my customs with separate arcade sticks... one look like the segment from audio tower or DVD and this is the best solution for me

but the truth - Sigma have best value for price/quality (much better solutions than SEGA and any other MAK on market)
realy hard to beat this setup

Hi, and thank you all for your answers.

The problem of the extension is that it necessary an extension for SCART cable, power cable and JAMMA...

What about adding a derivation (output) on the Raijin for an external arcade stick ?

Selling it would give you far more cash than the cost of the things you're mentioning would replace it.

But you should sell and buy a Sigma AV5000 / AV6000 instead. Something with an actual enclosure rather than some lame bits of acrylic.

Well if you did decide to part ways with the Sigma you dont have to turn your back on Arcade gaming completely......i know this is sacrilege to some here but with the advent of GroovyMAME you can get a more or less identical experience now, you have the CRT display already just get a small mid range PC and an Arcade stick and your sorted.

I got a Gigabyte Brix system for just under £170 (2nd hand) and it runs Groovymame fine and the thing is tiny!!...

But for CRT use you may need another alternative with a PC that has either a VGA or DVI port for the Graphics card

Why not just get a flexible long loom made up?

I agree. A AV6000 and TB9000 is a great bit of kit. The control box you can hide away together with the PCB and all that would be showing is your Joystick (TB9000). Would look great on your new dedicated gaming space. But if money is an issue, I would just build/buy a jamma extension.

Thank you. I like AV6000 because it has DB15 joysticks.
Actually I'm trying to sell the Raijin or to trade it for a Supergun set equivalent...

Yes, screw superguns. Get a cab. :D

Hi,
finally I came to a conclusion.

Emulation is not for me, I really want to keep and enjoy my original JAMMA boards.

So if anyone is interested, I am willing to exchange my Sigma Raijin (fully functional, like new) with an equally functional JAMMA supergun with separate controls.

Thank you all for the good advice. :)
