PSP's ARE cool...

Post by JBC »

... if you know what to do with em'

I just went through the long process of learning how to run emulators on my new christmas gift.

First i had to upgrade from a version 1.51 to 2.00 and then downgrade to 1.50. Then i had to go and create a bunch of specific files and get some program thats in all spanish and do some more crazy stuff but in the end this is what i got...

The super famicom and mega drive emulators are all working quite well. The framerates are the biggest flaw - but if you just set the skipping to 2 then its not bad.

It's too bad the MAME's are running so slow. I tried to play Assault Unit Gallop on this thing and it was like watching someone trying to flip photos at me.

Anyway... this will tide me over until that Gradius Collection with 4 and Gaiden comes out next quarter...

You guys should see Mega Turrican running on this thing. It's so pretty!

Wow, thanks alot for this information.
Keep us posted please on further developments.
I'm eager to learn what's possible on the PSP and framerate is allways very important!
I choose Castlevania! :)
Is it that the super famicom emu runs choppier than the megadrive emu?

This wouldn't happen to be Demon's Crest would it?
I love that game, really should dig it out again and give it a go.

I haven't got a PSP yet - for the cost of a Giga Pack here in the UK, I bought a Mario Kart DS pack and 5 good games - but emulation is tempting. But not until the bugs and framerates are sorted out.

I already upgraded to 2.6, so I think I'll get a GP2X for my portable emulation needs.

Heh, just today I've spent most of my time playing Link's Awakening on my PSP.

The thing is, it's likely that from now on commercialy released games will require the 2.50 or even 2.60 firmware installed. And at least at the moment there's no way to run homebrew or downgrade from those. Taito's Exit, which was released just a while ago, already does. Shame, since I'm really interested about it, but now I'm torn.

Well, we'll see. Hopefully homebrewers will catch up in time for the Gradius collection.

Faggotry. I hope they catch up as well... or at least create the downgrade/upgrade utilities so that we can switch off...

That is indeed Demon's Crest, Icarus... a forgotten gem that deserves more exposure than it gets...

good ole' Firebrand. I was elated to see that Capcom included him as the final hidden character in CFEvolution...

circuitface you ought to check out the PC-Engine and NeoGeo CD emulators, those are actually working better than the SNES and MD ones.

Indeed, it's very cool, although I am contemplating upgrading, and I very well may once I get my GP2X.

I think there should still be a MWIV translation patch floating around the web.

And yeah, Wonderboy I - that's not Wonderboy, but the Adventure Island series, as we all know.

Hey, why don't we make a Wonderboy III: Monster Lair Scortable! :D

I think there is something call MPH Firmware Launcher that takes care of that.

Also, there's already an exploit which allows you to run most homebrews on 2.00 systems as well.

Since most new releases require 2.50 upgrade,I'm seriously debating on whether or not I should buy a second psp system....:?

Thats all fine and dandy, but what to the vertical games look like with that W I D E screen?

It would be perfect for some Tate action...if you held the thing sideways...then again, I feel like I have arthritus from just playing Ridge Racer for half an hour!!!
Most likely, no PSP fer me.

Letterboxed, so the games are still displayed in their native aspect ratio (unless you actually tell the emulator to stretch it out weirdly). Just means that most of the PSP's screen is just black. Keep in mind though that I don't know of any verts for PSP that actually support a true tate screen mode, they've all been altered to be played on a yoko orientation during the porting process.

Yea, I kinda figured that. I was mostly talking about when/if there ever is a Saturn/PS1 emu.

Hmm, I don't know about those, BIG... I guess I've only bothered to download games for which I actually own a HuCARD... but I didn't think that turning your TV over was popular 15 years ago...

Oh, and I have you guys beat :p

Oh,those are actual PSP games and not teh romz.

Also, how are you liking the GP2X? How are the emulators compared to those on the PSP?

I'm really tempted to order one....

How's the stick? Is it microswitched like the NGP? If so, I must have a GP2X.

Oh sorry about that BIG...

I have Star Soldier, holding the PSP vertically (for Star Soldier at least) is easier than it looks, and feels quite natural to me, although my left ring finger will get a bit of pain after resting the edge of the PSP on it for long periods, and diagonals are still hard to hit due to the crappy D-pad.

I only had my GP2X for a day before leaving town (and now I just got back)... the emulators are still getting there, give them more time. The PCE emulator doesn't run as well as the ones for PSP, but I find the Genesis one runs a bit better in terms of speed (but has some layering problems with some games still). No comments on SNES and NGCD as I haven't tried them yet.

The stick is supposed to be microswitched, although it doesn't feel like it - it doesn't click like the NGP(C). I'm having trouble getting "Left" to register, I'll have to shave a bit of plastic off the bottom of the stick. The rest of the unit feels fantastic to hold though - the buttons feel great to push, and the finish is comfortable to touch and doesn't attract fingerprints and smudges easily. Keep in mind that the firmware still has little bugs here and there, but they'll be fixed in due time. It will take patience but I strongly believe that this will be all worth it in the end.

circuitface:

FYI, you can run most emulators and many homebrew games (like Noiz2sa) using Fanjita's 2.0 eboot loader. Just do a search on pspupdates.com for it. Only emu I can't get the program to boot after upgrading to 2.0 is NeoCD. :( But Nester, Genny, and SNES run fine using it.

edit: Oh yeah, and here is another cool use I found for mine:

FYI,there's a new NeoCDemu patch (v053fix) out. This one fixes a few bugs and offers even more sound support than the last revision (AF2-3,Ghost Pilots,Last Resort,Pulstar,Iron Clad, all running 100% w/sfx+BGM!).

Check pspupdates for it.

Thanks, man. :) Now I just need to figure out how to get it to run with with my 2.0 eboot. Still cannot figure out why it boots all my other emus on 2.0 but my Neo. :(

If fanjita's boot loader doesn't support it, there's nothing you can do besides waiting for the next update. Of course, you could always downgrade to 1.50. All the homebrews without the need of a boot loader and you can still play commercial games requiring 2.0 firmware. No reason not to, really.

I did downgrade several times when I owned PSP Battlefront II before returning it and exchanging it for Coded Arms. And Fanjita's loader does support NeoCD PSP. I should clarify, I got it to load my Neo CD menu, but Metal Slug would not load and gave an error. After that I couldn't even get it to list the rom. Oh well, until stupid 2.6 hits I can still downgrade after I beat Tokobot (which is well worth the update, great game)

I just can't bring myself to download ISOs, thanks though. Plus now that I have this new, smoother eboot loader I have even less need.
