Importing for the Nintendo DS

Post by jp »

I just ordered Jump Superstars and Devilish. Jump Superstars I know will be good given its praises. And I LOVE Devilish anyways, so why the hell not?

Anyways, I'm just wondering what are some other good import titles for the DS? Obviously, I don't want anything that will eventually get a US release. So are the Gundam games import friendly and good? How good is that Nagetto game Success made with the golf like gameplay? Anything non-rhythm based I should look into?

The only one I've heard about recently was Oendan... it's probably really good, considering it's managed to grab my attention and I DESPISE the DS.

Yes, Ouendan is quite good, and quite unlikely to ever see a release outside of Japan. At one point I would have said Electroplankton too, but that is due for a US release shortly. Depending on what the US release looks like, you might actually be better off grabbing the Japanese version anyway for the extra earbuds included in the box.

Bubble Bobble DS came out a few weeks ago. Mine should be here soon. Rainbow Islands comes out next month.

Bubble Bobble DS and Rainbow Islands DS are coming out in the states though aren't they? Both are being handled by the same people who did Space Invaders DS... so I figured both of those would be shoe ins for a US release.

Isn't Ouendan a rhythm/music game? Thats what I heard... not too interested if so. If its a 2D platformer or something... then cool. Otherwise, eh.

I'm thinking about importing that Slime 2 game. The Dragon Warrior spin-off. The reviews look good, and it sounds like its import friendly. I may go ahead and import that.

I'm enjoying the DS Ganbare Goemon Toukai Dochuu quite a bit so far. The main game has the wackiness Goemon is known for along with a very nifty art style. The game seems to have an overworld ala Zelda, though the towns and enemy areas are seperate like in Goemon 2 (no sidescrolling except for the Goemon Impact scenes so far, though). Like previous Goemon games, power ups and money are earned by fighting enemies. It's not the most import friendly game, but much of the humor in that game doesn't need words and much of the game can be solved with trial and error.

As said before, Ouendan is quite nifty. It makes good use of the stylus control while doing a fine job of matching the rythm of the music. This game uses songs with full vocals despite the DS's cartridge medium. There are even some voice clips like the hilarious "Ouendan!!" that occurs before most songs. Ouendan is definatly a music game so it may not be your cup of tea, though.

The Japanese only Puzzle Bobble DS is a completely different game from US Bust-A-Move DS and has some cool stuff Bust-A-Move DS/Hippatte Puzzle Bobble (Japanese name for the US Bust-A-Move DS) doesn't have like an edit mode. The US Bust-A-Move DS is definatly worth picking up, though. It's cheaper than the Japanese only Puzzle Bobble DS (most places have it for only 20 dollars) and has multi for up to five players. Puzzle Bobble DS has only 2 players. I definatly plan to import Puzzle Bobble DS.

There's an upcoming Starfi game coming to the DS. I heard some good things about the GBA ones and I'm hoping the DS one will turn out good. I want to try to import one of the GBA ones, though.

Yeah, I'm amazed the Starfi series wasn't brought stateside...that's a Bernie Stolar mistake if I ever saw one.

I tried to find a Legend of Stafi (I think that's the title, and Starfi's the name?) series overview, but couldn't. I thought there was a page dedicated to it...

Anyways, it's a really colorful and cute looking side-scroller with a star as the main character. I'm certain the series started years ago on the GBA (2001, I think), but I've heard there was a GBC game. Check out play-asia for some screens and whatnot.

I've never played a Stafi game, I just think they look like great game and should've came to the States.

Here's an article on all three of them: http://www.ntsc-uk.com/review.php?platf ... endOfStafi

I just played through the first Stafi game and I think it's very good. I liked it so much I even changed my avatar to Stafi, as you can see on the left. The game itself is a bit like the Kirby games - quite easy, but very creative and lots of fun. It's not similar to Ristar. I will order the second and third game soon and the DS one as soon as it comes out.

Great stuff, highly recommended. Just don't expect any serious challenge.
