Hehe, I think Stahfeder is probably the one shmup that is harder not to 1CC on your first try than it is to clear it. It's a shame, cuz otherwise the game isn't all that bad, and I quite like the graphics too.

Apparently my general shmup competence level has ranked up slightly from perma-noob; I was bored so I just decided to play a credit of Battle Garegga in MAME. Despite the fact I haven't played in weeks I was able to get to the beginning of the base stage, a feat I only accomplished once before. Then again maybe it was just a lucky credit...

I tend to be stronger overall at shmups after taking semi-long breaks like that. Obviously the small details get a little messy and you have to repractice them, but I think taking an extended vacation gives your brain time to really internalize your route and commit it to subconscious memory.

Same here, I tend to take long breaks playing RPG's and I'm always better when I come back to a game after a few weeks/months.

I 1CC'd Space Megaforce last night. Not a very hard game, but I like the Compile games from the 16 bit era. It's not MUSHA or Spriggan, but I found it pretty enjoyable.

I recommend trying it on the hardest difficulty. I think it becomes Compiles Magnum Opus there.

Haha that's how I felt.

After clearing DU2 on normal I thought "hm.. True last boss and trillionaire achievements eh? Maybe i'll try playing for score."

Maybe not for DU2, but I feel like you have to play Asterbreed for score to get any kind of enjoyment out of it at all, at least on normal.

Also personally I feel DU2 is a lot like Touhou in that you really need to play it on the hardest setting to get the most out of it: it's roughly equivalent to Ketsui's or Doj's first loop on that setting.

Except Ketsui is fun to play. Maybe it's something about DU2's visual feedback but I certainly do not feel that I'm one with the ship.

Did you try it on settings other than normal? Personally the game feels fine. I don't care about scoring, but the patterns are quite enjoyable on (what is pretty obviously intended to be) arcade difficulty.

Well, to each his own than. Though it's definitely no Ketsui/Doj/Mushi, I think some of the patterns are fun and clever, and the level design is pretty solid throughout. I do find it worth returning to every so often.

My saying it's no fun is totally unfair. Maybe unnecessarily frustrating but my feeling of not being at one with the ship could easily come from me I suppose.
I agree with all you've said though, I'll come back to it after a while and play expert some more.

I can vouch for that, I was really disappointed with Astebreed the first time I 1cc:d the jp version (and dropped it after) but after playing the english version months later I ended up enjoying the scoring.

I'd argue it's a good scoring system since it encourages you to use all the abilities you have efficiently, speedkill bosses and avoid taking any hits. On the flipside you can pretty much get a normal 1cc by mashing buttons which is bad design. Looking at the leaderboards very few people really got into the scoring though, so I probably have weird taste. It's a very untraditional game in any case, doesn't really feel like an STG because of the low emphasis on normal shooting and dodging.

This randomly happened. I managed to do a perfect run of the stage portion of stage 3 in Perfect Cherry Blossom on lunatic (no bombs or lives lost). I still need to work on my survival against boss Alice. I normally go through about 2 bombs at best just dealing with the stage portion alone.

Finally! Batrider normal course. Not worth uploading a screen shot as the score was shit! Weird game in some respects, it's sort easy but hard at the same time. I'm also pretty pleased it's my first actual pcb clear.

Cheers blinge! I've nearly cleared it so many times... I really don't get how to play it beyond the basics! It's pretty fun though despite playing on a modded mega drive pad :/
I've also just remembered it was on my shmup goals list for 2014, at least i managed one of them! managed to clear ketsui x mode again, still ain't done arcade though... Yet!
