And you can use them with normal home TVs, that's an important bit. So they're basically consolized arcade hardware.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Re: So WTH are "Superguns"?
Ive always like the idea of building my own Supergun but with arcade pcb's rising in price all the time that idea looks more and more unlikely to happen

with the advent of groovymame I've decided not to build a supergun. purists will always want the pcbs though. I totally understand that. but like you said lettuce the prices are getting crazy.

Read somewhere the first models, manufactured by some Japanese or Taiwanese company, were named 'Super Gun' and that name just stuck.

Only if supported, of course. Us in the US with no RGB input standard on TVs have to go to the expense of finding better screens, or having encoders for component / s-video / whatever.Ghegs wrote:And you can use them with normal home TVs

Re: So WTH are "Superguns"?
I always have assumed it is a play off of the electron gun inside a CRT - something much more "accessible" when inside an arcade machine as there is no housing around it like a commercial set. It is just an open chassis inside the arcade machine with easy access to the circuit board, neck board, flyback, adjustments, etc.Lawfer wrote:Thats what I was thinking...Pasky wrote:Better question is...why the hell are they called super guns?
As this device we are talking about here is designed to be able to take arcade components and "gun the image" to your television/external display rather than to a CRT built into a self-contained arcade machine, it was deemed "supergun."
So the electron beams don't have to stop at the end of the CRT inside the arcade cabinet because they can now go ANYWHERE....
A bit of an abstract term for it as a supergun doesn't literally fire electron beams across the entire planet, but that's my take. I might be way off.
