Anyone play shmups on Xbox w/emu

Post by lawnspic »

Just curios to see if anyone plays shmups on their xbox's. I use Mamedox, and 128 plus builds which work almost perfect. I also use FBAxxxpro. Nothing beats ESP and Dodonpachi on FBAxxx with the memory throttle on so there is no slowdown and Hidef set in 480p. I have seen many games on there native hardware but the Xbox has far superior video quality.

Whats the problem, alot of people play on their PC's with Mame. The developers put alot of effort with these emu' and as far as i'm concerned they are equal to there PC origins. Im not saying the overall experience is better than an original cabinet of a particular title, just that it is a very enjoyable one with the benefits of todays technology. So if you want a BBQ my grill is all fired up and ready to go.

 Some people actually prefer the low-resolution display modes of the original games.

But yes for folks who prefer the big screen filtered hi-res look, an xbox w/component video output is certainly a playable inexpensive option for shmupping fun.

My thoughts exactly, im not flaming the arcade i would kill for the real thing, but this is a very good alternative. If anyone has the proper setup with an Xbox you would have to agree some of the games play and look great. Some prefer Mame on PC but i hate sitting in front of a computer to play my favorite shmup. Also as for the first post given i hope i was not coming off as some noob, im in my 30's and have been playing for some time, and i have a collection of games and shmups spanning many systems(Saturn being my favorite for shmups, ST-V ports anyone). So sorry for not being more detailed in my first post.

Count me in as a low-res lover, particularly for 2D games. Unless of course the sprites were actually drawn with the intent of the game being played at 640x480, which generally seems limited to PC shooters.

Playing low-res games at "480p" with or without filtering looks ugly to me. But each to their own I guess.

3D is another story. If it supports native "hi-res" (and remember, in arcade speak that's 640x480), then that's the only way to fly in my books. :)

I understand Sega Lindbergh will push for games at 1024x768 and higher. I wonder if we'll see any tradtional style shmups on this platform in the future?

Indeed it's unfortunate that legacy low res videogame display modes doesn't work well with modern LCD screen technology. Due to its use of discrete pixels, the end result is never pretty for detailed hand-drawn art. I suppose CRT screens will stay in demand as a niche market for years to come, for this kind of thing.

Yes, that's the way I feel about playing shmups on PCs too, although I'm sure if we took the time and money to setup a kickass MAME cabinet w/Seimitsu controls and dedicated monitor then our impressions might change. ;)

Mamedox displays games not in a full screen, some games looks really creepy and xbox pad is the worst I ever carried. I prefer to put my laptop on side and play some not ported games from time to time.
Xbox is pure media player for me :)

I've personally found that the Xbox emulators filters in general are really poor. If I was to play emulation on anything at a high-res display, I'd use the normal mame with some nice fake scanlines to at least simulate the low-res feel, even if it's fake. Mamedx may have such features, as Xbox emulation has come along way. Then again, most Xbox emulators didn't do this so well when I fidgeted with them, and it's not exactly an advanced feature.

ok, when i use mamedox im using no video blitters and keep the aspect of the original preserved and the games look incredible. Keep in mind im using a Sony 4:3 HDTV Wega Hi-Scan(CRT) so things are looking as close as i can get it. As for controller i hate the xbox controller as well for shmups, so i use a psx pad adapter for better play. In all if you have not tried shmups on a properly equipped xbox i think you would be missing out, and these emus are quite active(check out 1emulation) they see new updates on a regular basis. I dont know about other people but what i see on my screen is pure gaming bliss. To each his(or her) own.

Not to rain on your parade, but unless your playing games that were originally for use w/ a 31khz monitor (which Mame doesn't emulate many of, if any) then that will be about as far as possible from the original as you can get. The closest would be a 28" vertical arcade RGB monitor. The next, an RGB capable TV on it's side. At the other end of the spectrum would be upscaling all this into 480P on an HDTV.

key words "as i can get it" that tv weighs in a 220LB so no luck. all in all if you guys were in my living room you would not care because it plays really well, and that goes for the purists as well. im just basically open to all kinds of shmupping experiences (ie. emulated, console, arcade, ect) so im wont try to compare apples to oranges.

i would pay a lot of money for an xbox loaded with shmup roms. it wouldn't in any way stop me from collecting and playing legit console ports and hopefully soon pcbs. i'd just love instant and easy access to a lot of the more enjoyable and largely unavailable games. i just don't knwo how to do it, where to go or anyth9ing. i'm useless. :(

It's not exaclty hard! Use google. Find a pre-modded xbox locally, you can get them from ebay if you haven't got anywhere local. read www.xbox-scene.com and the forums there. a dvd writer is useful. there are DVDs like Slayers Auto Evox Installer that do most of the work for you. We can't talk about where to get roms from, but using google will normally help you find answers to just about anything.

invest 2 - 12 hours in reading up about modded xboxes, about 4 hours to set it up once you have a modded one and you'll be playing mame on the xbox and it won't have cost you more than £200.

It's not even that much time. My Xbox was my first mod ever. I think maybe 2 hours of reading, Maybe an hour on a "learn to solder" kit just in case, and then about an hour to do the mod.

hey gaijin what do you think of xbox emulation as a whole ? what emus are you using, have you used the latest FBAxxx 8_26 and have you tried it with the pro patch. Just wanted to see if your opinions are based on the latest emus and if you think they are worthy. I think the "others"(Toaplan,Cave,Raizing) category is quite good for shmups not to mention great compatability with Cps1 and 2 and of course Neo Geo.

I've not played them in a while. I've got a PC that is going to be emulation only once I get the cable for it to hook up to the RGB monitor. Can't wait actually... the only difference between it and the real thing should be the cab.

From what I played, the emus are good, but definitely not better than their PC counterparts. I guess the one that I really enjoyed was the 3-in-1 N64 emulator (which I've forgotten the name of). AFAIK, v2.0 never came out, so the compatibility list is still relatively weak. Times have no doubt changed though.

I think you mean Surrealxxx or Surreal(xxx is a unofficial continuation from the guys behind Fbaxxx) for xbox which is the top N64 emulator combining Project64, 1964, and Ultra HLE. Yeah its awesome 1964 plays Sin and Punishment really well, and the compatability is pretty decent to boot

As for the cab you should build one, Ive seen many different ones on the net, some w/console's only, some with a PC and xbox's running emus. I saw plans for them somewhere

FBAxxx pro is sweet, I use a modded agetec with sanwa parts on it and a component wega turned on its side for some bakraid, garegga, dodonpachi action.

Pretty fucking smooth.

But now that I have my supergun/19 inch rgb combo with raiden fighters jet and super turbo, there's no looking back.

yeah i use a modded xbox for emulation, best console i've ever owned! It's like having the history of videogames in a box. Okay i have about 10,000 roms and have only put any real time into about 20/30 but i know if i have the urge to play on something it's there.

Yeah, Surreal -- that's it. I remember they talked about a 2.0 forever, and then, nothing. The compatibility was good enough for me to play Majora's Mask until the last fucking dungeon, and then it didn't work.

I don't have the space for a cab (and I move a lot). If I lived in a big place permanently, I'd have an Astro City by now. It's just not in the cards... at all. :(

-How can they be much better? They're ports of PC emulators on systems with limited memory and CPU speed.
-Many graphics cards work on your TV.

The other consoles dont count in my book unless you are running 16 bit games. the xbox is basically a cheap pc inside and can play most shmups(not most recent of course) with 100 percent speed with no problem. Games like Batrider, Dodonpachi, Cyvern, Progear, Batsugun(nosound yet), Esp, Guwang, BGaregga play perfect as far as emulation is concerned. The requirements to run shmups on a PC did no require that fast of a system so the xbox has more than enough power to run those roms and many other shmups without a hitch. The new builds of mame use virtual memory optimtzations and most are written for specific games, also there is suppot for 128mb xbox's as well. Go to 1Emulation for more info and check out the Xbox emu section. Download the Fbaxxx rar and unzip the DAT file and check out the supported list in romcenter. Every game in Fbaxxx run just about perfect. Mame of course has games which still need work (ST-V games and Raiden Games) but in recent news they just got Raiden 2 running on mame for the xbox. Check it out

I don't own an Xbox yet, but I've read about solderless mods that are now available. When I purchase an Xbox, it will be premodded w/ a solderless mod & a larger hard drive.

its way behind the last official is v.84, i dont know what the unofficial builds are as of now. If you want the cutting edge of emulation stick with the pc, but if you want to play some good shmups try the xbox
