I quite like Raiden III on PS2. Yes - it might be bare bones compared to modern releases, but it isn't a modern game. I actually think for it's time is was quite well presented in terms of features. There are high score tables for each mode - each with a table for single dual or double - and seperate tables for each level in score attack. With a score attack mode, practice mode , boss rush, double mode (2 ships with one controller) , 2 player versus and coop modes, and replay support what's not to like?
Game wise it is old school and I can why some folk here don't like it because score-wise it is very straightforward. The little snipers aren't fun either and the bullets can be hard to see in places but I like it.

I haven't really played a raiden game earnestly except for Raiden 4 and RF1. I'm trying to understand why there's so much hate for 3. I've added it to my wish list and will probably buy it in the future. But what's so game breakingly bad about it?
People disliked the green beam weapon in the bishop laser's stead. It can, however, be:
a) ignored or
b) utilised (if memory serves, it penetrates every obstacle like thin air, i.e. the enemies can't shield each other from it).
The complaints about slow "ship" speed and sniper shots make me think those who complain haven't played old Raidens (not RF) for a while.

Not really a big fan of those either . That being said, I don't know if they felt quite as slow though. RIII made me feel like I was stuck in permanent focus mode or something.

Instead I am stuck in the America's where women rule with an iron crotch, and a man could get arrested for sitting behind a computer too long.
Movement is slow. Booted it up last night after posting. It doesn't look quite as good as I remember but I think that's more of a thing to do playing PS2 games on an LCD panel. Of all my consoles the PS2 seems to take the greatest hit in image quality on my Somy 32" Bravia which handles my other older consoles extremely well. I have my CRT rotated at the minute so I must try it with that.
I enjoyed going back to it - more than I thought I would - but I like old school STGs being of a that vintage myself.

Well excuse me if I'm restating common knowledge, but Raiden Fighters was originally developed as its own series but had the Raiden name appended at the last minute to increase appeal.
Kinda like how Descent: Freespace has nothing to do with the Descent series at all, just legal wrangling over the rights to the Freespace software title.
That said, I will definitely say the music is lousy.
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.
An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.
Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

It tends to appeal to folks who have fond memories of shmups from early nineties (not necessarily crazy about the genre or bullet hell in particular). That I'm sure was the developers' goal (much like with Trizeal).

Again and again, Raiden III doesn't have screen wobble (unlike about any other). This may make the game feel somewhat contracted, but since I don't like screen wobble, I consider it a good trade-off.

Raiden III's ship speed is like Dracula XX's walk speed. Sluggish and dopey and I almost envy those who apparently can't perceive for whatever reason.
That said, it's not Tiger Heli bad or anything. Just noticeably a bit dopey.
Haha. Speaking of Raiden and default settings, back in the 90s literally every arcade I played Raiden 1 in had checkpoints turned on. Many years later I got a pcb with an arcade manual included, and it appears that checkpoints off is the default setting? Those bastards ...
Sad news, but expected nonetheless. I wrote to H2 Interactive a while ago and this is what they told me:
Hello, Could it be possible to add Steam Leaderboards to Raiden III? One of the core aspects of a shoot 'em up is to compare scores with other players and Steam supports leaderboards natively. The documentation on how to do this can be found here: https://partner.steamgames.com/document ... aderboards I hope this can be implemented, it would push me to buy this game to some of my friends. Thanks in advance!
Greetings,
First of all, we apologize for the delayed response and thank you for your interest in the game.
Unfortunately, we will not be adding Steam leaderboard feature to Raiden 3, because the devs are focusing on developing new releases.

So Raiden IV is coming to Steam?
I wouldn't hold your breath on that ever happening. Chances are, PC gamers will only ever get the extremely buggy/touchy Taito Type-X emulation (which I could never get to work) as far as Raiden IV's concerned.
