Official SEGA VGA Box, how exactly do you choose 240p, 480i?

Post by Lawfer »

Okay so I have the official SEGA VGA box, some games support it while others dont and some displays support 480p while other dont, so my question is, is there any option to output VGA while being able to choose between 240p, 480i and 480p?

For example Dino Crisis on dreamcast looks great in-game with the VGA Box, except that it doesnt support ut whitout a trick and you cant watch cutscenes in 480p, so say I would like to play Dino Crisis on Dreamcast with VGA output whitout cutscenes skipping, is there a way I can choose to play the game in 480i or 240p in VGA mode?

not on the official VGA box. The PC/TV switch toggles between VGA output and s-video/composite output.

You can mod your VGA to allow you to switch between 15khz and 31khz while leaving RGBHV enabled. Or you can get an after-market VGA box like the Hanzo or Toro that already come with above switch.

Thanks,

Is there a list of 240p only, 480i only and 480p capable games?

The Emuparadise: Dreamcast VGA Compatibility list is the closest I've seen - unfortunately it only differentiates between VGA and TV. TV could be 15kHz RGB mode (480i or 240p) or standard mode 480i; there is the odd game that only supports "standard mode" (i.e. composite video/S-Video) that is neither VGA nor 15kHz RGB capable.

http://retrorgb.com/dreamcast.html lists some 240p games.

BTW I presume that you have a display or processor that can deal with 15 kHz RGBHV 240p and (more to the point) 480i?

No I dont, I have to convert RGBHV to RGBS.

You should lift and remove the vga pin(#6) then solder it to a toggle switch along with a ground wire.

That is what the Toro is for.

Alternately you can roll your own sync combiner:
DCEmulation: Dreamcast 480p XRGB-mini Framemeister Cable.

Lol wont be doing that then, official VGA Boxes are expensive. Id rather get a Kuro or something, does the Kuro output 15khz while still leaving RGBHV enabled?

Yes - that is something the Dreamcast does by default.

Not sure if this is relevant to your situation: Dreamcast universal VGA/RGB box from BuckoA51.

Pretty sure all of those are full VGA (though Ghost Blade is still vapourware) so most people wouldn't run them in 15kHz RGB mode.

So 480p then? But I read online that they are 240p?

The games are probably rendered internally 320 x 240 - so you may be able get them at 240p through 15kHz RGB. I would have expected more vocal complaints though if any of those games did not work in VGA/480p mode.

I dont get it, I thought that some dreamcast games (very few) had a max resolution of 240p, like Bangai-oh?

Neo XYX list this:
VGA (requires a VGA box) / LOWRES
S-VIDEO and RGB at 240p
By LOWRES, they mean 240p, no?

The developer even says this:
NG:Dev.Team wrote:Will it display highres?
No. Even with a VGA box utilized the game won't display highres. It will still display lowres graphics.

LOWRES may be their way of saying that the 320 x 240 game is scaled by the software/Dreamcast.
VGA is always 480p. S-Video is always 480i. They say that Neo XYX will be 240p in 15 kHz RGB.

Remember NG:DEV games are typically developed for the MVS first (240p) then ported to the Dreamcast.

So what does that mean? If I put in Neo XYX in my Dreamcast and have it hooked with the SEGA VGA Box, I will get Neo XYX upscaled to 480p?
