Alternative ways to play games.
Re: Alternative ways to play games.
I have a Sudoku game on my cellphone. It begins with ridiculously trivial 6 by 6 puzzles, which I solve in 20 to 45 seconds; rather than normal Sudoku-solving skills, these puzzles challenge finger dexterity and motion planning because speed depends on getting the cursor to all cells that need a number.

Re: Alternative ways to play games.
I've done a bunch of Cave Story challenge runs, the best of which were:
-- 3HP run
-- Polar Star only
-- No saving
I succeeded at the first two. In my no saving run, I died at quite literally the last possible place you can die, milliseconds before the game ends, it seems really silly and out of place -- I don't think it was a glitch, though, it was more like an oversight on the part of the developer.

Isn't hard mode always a 3HP run?
And damn son, I can't even beat Running Hell, that last section with Curly to get the true ending, on normal. Let alone any of that stuff.
I'm trying to remember challenge runs I've done in the past.
I did a Demon Souls.. erm.. super Linear playthrough? So once you pick an Archstone you have to follow it through to the end without ever returning to the Nexus. Any fans of the game will know that's rather problematic as you can't level up at all until you return to the Nexus. Upon finally returning you'll be carrying a huge amount of souls that could easily go to waste if you die and lose them.
I've started a fist-weapons only game of Dark Souls, had to use the master key and get to the first Blacksmith early just to buy some Cestus (knuckle duster) as my bare hands were dealing 1 damage to the weakest of enemies. The dregling rush before Bell Gargoyles was really tricky, and the Gargoyles themselves wrecked me

Re: Alternative ways to play games.
There's one health upgrade on Hard mode. The +5 one from one of the dogs before the Last Cave. At least I think it's that one, but there is a health upgrade, and it is a +5.
I took a 3 health run Hard Mode up to Ballos but I wasn't able to clear it because of the lack of Missles on Hard Mode and I had taken the Nemesis instead of the Blade which although good for the normal end final bosses sucked for the final phase of Ballos. I then restarted the 3 health run and beat it on Normal by doing the thing where you take 2 damage from the spikes, fly by his eyes, then use a bunch of missles on them.

Yeah Ballos is a total dick. To correct what I said earlier: I have beaten Running Hell, just not Ballos.
Heh just remembered another run I've done. Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon - Marth only playthrough!
Basically the first couple of chapters might be a bit difficult but after he vacuums up all the experience meant for your other units, he's an abosolute beast in the early game and one-shots everything stupid enough to take him on. It's kinda game breaking really, but he caps at level 30 iirc so I ended up bringing in two more units and letting them become indestructible too. It might be worth doing it again and recording it without using other units, but it'd probably be somewhat boring and maybe a maximum one hardcore FE fan would watch it.
I wonder if it'd work with Ike in Path of Radiance?
Actually maybe a lot of Strategy RPGs could be broken this way, I know the Valkyria Chronicles speedrun basically involves making Alicia OP as soon as possible then using her to steamroller the rest of the game.
