Favorite sound font in video games

Post by 1983parrothead »

Be very specific. If you say 8-bit, then what kind? Konami NES? Sunsoft NES? PSG of MSX and SMS?

There are also numerous sound fonts found in various arcade systems. I like the DECO32 arcade cabinet:

I've recently revisited most of Naoki Kodaka and co's Famicom Sunsoft OSTs, via the ROM Cassette in Sunsoft compilation. Batman and Raf World in particular are astonishingly rich (as well as superbly composed) - I always turn my stereo up for those two. The team behind those soundtracks had serious chops both musically and technically.

Sakimoto/Iwata's MD canon (eg Gauntlet, Verytex, Midnight Resistance, Bad Omen) is another legacy of brilliance. So goddamn heavy.

FM synthesis for life. To narrow it down a bit, Truxton's YM3812 usage makes me very happy indeed.

I'm also a fan of that somewhat low quality streaming audio that came about afterwards. DDP and DOJ's soundtracks come to mind as examples. Just like how abrasive it sounds.

Nichibutsu did a lot of good stuff with YM3XXXs which gave them a distinctive 'house sound' - ArmedF, Terra Cresta etc.
