I'd like to see more shmups go the "Rez" route, with a skeletal basic soundtrack being filled in with smartly designed sound effects. It's a really effective way of sucking the player in and connecting him to the action on screen; perfect for shmups.

Space Invaders Extreme and it's sequel are the only ones I can think of to have gone that route; the effect works well in both cases, even if the overall sound design is a bit grating and uninspired.

Beat Hazard Ultra and Everyday Shooter.

BIT.TRIP BEAT does interesting progression-based things with music as well, but it's not a shmup.

I've replaced the horrible soundtrack of Patriot Dark with the Total Annihilation soundtrack and it fits like a glove!

Agreed. Also, K.H.D.N's 6th Anniversary Mix of the Karous OST is sooo good 8)

Style and genre doesn't matter for me. Obviously I'd pick something with a steady melody over a bunch of percussion, such as post-1m26s vs. pre-1m26s of this, but the most important thing is the music needs to match the action. Can't have fast-paced music while you casually align yourself to popcorns or calm music in boss fights.

Respect to both of these. Karous OST is pure amaze.

Ketsui is Namiki in his prime. Just a shame his audio balancing skills weren't perfected, those beats should come through with more punch. Still legendary though.

Got a memory jog with Rez - that was one OST I did commit to MP3 player, and Wipeout got some airtime too once upon a day. Sasha's Xpander edit from W3 is solid.

I can't understand why you would post such a response while omitting the qualifying paragraph I was quoting, thus changing the original meaning (which was there are other pieces of in-game audio aside from Raiden.)

Feeling ok? :|

I didn't want to go back into the subject (derailing ugh) but Guilty Gear is indeed one of my top 10 favorite soundtracks of all time. I didn't like it at first, and it did take a while to get into it, but I never looked back once I did.

I will at least say that I particularly don't like the last one (not a fan of the vocals, and I don't really like any of the remixes from Chrono Phantasma). The first one I actually kind of like, but it's not a good representation of the most hot blooded tracks in the series. Noontide from the original is by far the quintessential one.

As a fan of rock, edm, some metal. I still prefer cheesy melodies in games lol.

I'll vote for synth music, like G.Rev usually has in their games (and similar soundtracks like Yousuke Yasui's for Eschatos).

Strania is probably my favorite among the recent soundtracks. The use of power synth chords here is impressive, and does more for me than most metal soundtracks. BTW the use of stage 5's Strania Side BGM in the launch trailer was a good choice. Getting such an awesome sample for starters made me wonder what else Keishi Yonao was set to deliver in the full game.

That said, metal can work if it's done like MUSHA, Thunder Force 4, Lords of Thunder, or Hyakutaro Tsukumo style (Gunhound EX is a good recent example).
Kinect? KIN NOT.
