DVDO VP30 Interference Issue

Post by Skips »

A few weeks ago I bought a DVDO VP30 and an ABT102 and it does the job well enough however I am getting some interference in the picture. It started off as wide static like bars moving from top to bottom (most noticeable in blacks and browns). I thought this might be a bad power supply so I bought a cheap replacement off eBay. Low and behold what the sent me was the same type of power supply I had so I guess the seller of my VP30 was sending new crappy power supplies out. I tried the new unit regardless but still got interference. This time it was different though. Instead of horizontal static like scrolling bars I got diagonal static like bars going left to right.

If this were an issue with my unit I would assume the interference would not change when I change the power supply. I was thinking of doing two things. First would be getting a new PSU however eBay only seems to have the super cheap power supplies like mine. Doing a google search returns http://www.amazon.com/DVDO-Universal-Po ... B009LQYPSM however that is mad expensive for a power supply. Does anyone have any recommendations on a good noise free power supply for the VP30 that is not total shit?

The next thing I was thinking of doing is getting a power filter to make sure it is not the power outlets in my house. I was thinking of something like what is below.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chief-PACPC1-Po ... 1e84091833

Aside from it being one of these two things I am not sure what else the issue could be (aside from a possible faulty VP30). I know its not my scart switch, it does it without it. It is also not the the scart to BNC adapter as I remade it again myself to make sure it was correct. Any input or ideas would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

**edit** The noise is present on all outputs (HDMI, VGA, and Component). It also does it regardless of the input being used so its not specific to the RGB inputs).

Is the ABT102 board properly inserted into its slot ?

The ABT upgrade card is notorious for becoming loose in transit, so reseating it can't hurt. I don't see it fixing the noise issue though.

I've never had any issues like this on any DVDO unit, no matter if I used cheap chinese PSUs, the ones originally supplied or an ultra high-end lab PSU. The power conditioner will only help if the noise is there on your outlet already, but I kinda doubt that - especially since none of your other equipment shows similar behaviour.

In my opinion (and experience) the SinPro PSUs supplied by DVDO aren't any better than what you can get yourself from China. They all got failing caps and will need a cap replacement at some point. The cab replacement is what I would try on your PSU instead of getting another one.

Instead of coming from the PSU it could be some kind of ground loop. If you disconnect everything except the PSU and the HDMI output cable, do you still get interference on the integrated test patterns ??

The noise is not in the test patterns, at least not that I can see. It is only present on devices being upscaled. I installed the ABT102, it was bought separately. I connected my scart switch to my cheap CVS287 video encoder last night as well and connected that to the TV. With Digitial Noise Reduction turned off there is still no noise so I doubt it is my setup. As for power supply I am using one of these cheap bastards - http://www.ebay.com/itm/AC-Adapter-For- ... 56633199b5 . I don't know what the official power supply looked like but these do not have a ground prong and I noticed the sinpro one does. It also gets extremely hot, almost too hot to touch.

Have you tried testing it on a different TV/Monitor?

diagonal static like bars going left to right.
I've got the same issue with my VP30. Never managed to solve it, and I doubt it's the PSU I'm using.

According to my tests using clean sync (so having a sync stripper in the setup) reduces the strength of the static for scart sources (it appears more faint). But I'm not 100% sure since I never did a side-to-side comparison.

Don't worry about it. You can travel from the Milky Way to Andromeda and back 1500 times before the sun explodes.

About 5 different TV's and monitors. I also removed the ABT102 and there was no change. It also does this when using composite and S-video inputs so I know its not the scart cables.

My whole setup uses composite sync and all inputs do this not just the RGB.
