What do others think of you playing shmups? By "others" I mean those who don't play shmups.

Wife doesn't understand the appeal, oldest daughter thinks they're all "impossible".
Friends mostly wonder why Im not playing the latest call of duty or whatever is currently trendy.

A friend watched me play Ibara recently and after the (first?) boss when you beat her before the next stage you get a couple close up pictures including a panty shot he was like "what.... the.... fuck..." to which I just replied "because Japan".

Most of my gaming friends (who aren't into shmups) are already hardcore game/action game enthusiasts, so they understand my liking for the genre more or less, even if they aren't super into it themselves.

My wife thinks they are loud and annoying. My son thinks the only good shooter is one preceded by FP. My daughter is disappointed that I have not one Hello Kitty shmup. My friends don't even know what I'm even talking about until I reference Galaga or some other crusty shmup. And it only comes up when I'm asked what I'm playing and whether it's COD or whatever. So, it's just me and my mountain of shmups. And we're just fine, thank you. Fuck the rest of the gaming community and their trendy games.

Why is the question in the thread title incongruous with the one in the OP?

Most of my UK based friends are gamers, while old school friends not into games have known about my hobby since forever and accept it as a characteristic.

In China no-one bats an eyelid. The PC Bangs may be the most popular gaming hangouts but there are still arcade centres everywhere where shmups are a common fixture, and commonly played by casual dwellers, girls, couples and enthusiasts.

Now if I told someone what I'd spent on shmups in the past, that might prompt some drink spitting.

The few people i keep as friends (the irl ones) knows what shmups are and acknowledge that its my version of competitive starcraft/fighting etc.
Family doesn't understand why i wanna play them or how i'm so "unbelievably good" at them (lol sheep can't tell)
ex still plays em'. Let's see, what else. Other gamers in my vicinity, well they tend to think that i'm not playing real games (read: competitive online kusoge like MOBA etc.) and its vice versa for me so

I've stopped bothering them with shmups long ago though, when I saw they didn't care about it.
I believe the reactions ranged from "oh, didn't know you were into these" to "man, why don't you play some 3D games ?".
Can't say they are hostile towards the genre as a whole, I think it just doesn't click with them.

Most of my friends are just bemused by it, they can't see the attraction. They aren't actively derisive but I think they see it as slightly pretentious in some way if that makes sense? The missus doesn't understand any video games at all so shmups are just the same for her, she does question if I'm actually having fun sometimes when she catches me cursing myself.

Kids are pretty enthusiastic about it. One kept screaming at me because I stopped shooting during DOJ's first boss.
Surprisingly enough, nobody bothered pointing out why I was playing as a little girl (when I do), so I'm thankful that I'm not surrounded by complete shitters.
I still get cheered on when I make it out of difficult sections. I think most people do have a secret boner for shooting games, but playing a different game from the rest of the world is a very heretical thing.

I think most people view shmups the way dogs view television; they'll look for a few seconds and then completely tune it out after concluding that it's just some bullshit that doesn't pertain to them.

Where exactly were you playing DOJ? Just curious.

I have friends who know I play shmups, but they seem pretty much apathetic to the genre in general, can't be bothered to try to play them.

I've been playing through quite a few CAVE titles on MAME on my work PC during my lunch hour.
I've had more than one person ask me "what's that shoot 'em up game you play?" to which I reply "which one?" and they say "there's more than one?". They literally can't tell the difference between any of them (apparently including Deathsmiles when the rest are played with the monitor rotated).

I usually refer to them as "2D shooters" or "old school shooters", so pretty much everyone lumps them under retro because they remember them being popular once, and has done with it. Which is reasonably fair to be honest, because I generally take older or old school-styled games over the CAVE inspired bullet hells.
