AV Famicom problem

Post by juji82 »

Hello everybody,
I just purchased an AV Famicom some times ago and today I decided to play out with It. I don't know if this is a problem itself and if so how much frequent, but cartridge sometimes does not load, I have to pull back and in 4-5 times before they work and even then if I move a bit the console they freeze and I have to restart. It could be loose contacts of the cartridge slot inside the famicom or maybe dirty? Or just cartridges are loose / need cleaning?
If somebody had this problem and knows a fix please write here, thank You!

Cleaning the contacts on both the cartridges and the console itself is a good start. Get some rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol), q-tips and go to town on those contacts.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

I had several famicoms with that problem over the years, as well as US and European versions. In most cases the problem got worse until nothing would load. I tried blowing the dust out of the cartridges etc and sometimes the games would load but I was never sure if that was what made the difference.

If you have tried multiple games and they all have problems loading, then it is most likely that one of the parts needs replacing.

Try cleaning the cartridges and the cartridge slot first, like the other guy posted. If that is the problem, then games should work consistently after than. A working machine did not require that games be cleaned before every use though, so the problem is likely more serious (if a simple cleaning doesn't fix it).

I got a number of machines fixed but that was in the early 90's. These days it is probably easier to just buy a new one. Btw, it was never one specific problem that caused that issue. Each time I got one repaired, it was a different part that needed replacing. Just about any part failing can cause games not to load. If a bit of solder needs redoing then that can cause that inconsistent problem where sometimes it loads and sometimes it doesn't. People used that to sell broken machines. Always be wary if the seller has the game ready loaded to show you when you come round to buy it.

The fact that moving it makes it crash makes me think that there is a lose connection inside and that dirt is not the issue. You should try opening it up. It may be obvious and easy to fix yourself if something just needs screwing back in. If you know how to use a soldering iron, it may also be an easy fix. Did the machine get dropped at some point?

Those machines did not age well which is a shame because there were a number of great classic games on it. Luckily we have emulators now.

Considering the number of AV Famicoms I've worked on, I beg to differ.

I've always found this to be the best way to clean carts.

First open up the NES/AV Famicom Game. Rub with a soft eraser the contacts. Blow away the left over rubber, and finish up with cotton bud + isopropyl alcohol (or electronic cleaner). It is easy to open up a NES cart, famicom on the other hand is not. So if it is a famicom, just use a q-tip + alcohol/contact cleaner on both sides of the pins until it comes clean.

To clean the cartridge connector I would get a thin white t-shirt + credit card. Wrap the credit card around the tshirt and get it wet with rubbing alcohol/contact cleaner. Stick it inside the cartridge slot and out (make sure to always do it straight, don't do it side to side as you could catch a pin and have to rebend). Do this until it comes back clean on your white t-shirt. You can also use a piece of cardboard if it is the same thickness as the cartridge connector and just get that wet.

Best of luck.
