Well, lots of doujin shmups do that.
2 words: Chaos Field.

Except, unlike other doujin shmups, C.F. doesn't have much originality to call its own. :?

Perhaps the title of "Most Aggressively Badmouthed Contemporary Commercial Shmup Release?" :P

But honestly, while no one's gonna deny that it borrows stuff from lots of other shmups, it does have the "field" mechanic, which is pretty unique...and honestly, run through the PC Shmup Database, you'll see lots of them described as "Gradius Clone," "R-Type Clone," "Thunderforce Clone," etc., so Chaos Field's not alone in that area either.

I've spent considerable amounts of time with many homebrew or doujin shmups. Take for example the aforementioned Die Slave (awesome game), Amanagi, Creature Jungle, & a few others I can't recall the names of. Let's not forget the "borderliner" shmups that were shareware releases, then commercially released on a smaller scale (i.e. Tyrian, Raptor, Overkill, Demonstar, etc).

I'm suprised nobody has mentioned Warning Forever or the AirRade series yet, those are two truly awesome games that I would (and have in AirRade's case) paid money for. Also anything by ABA Games is a must play really.

Generaly I find myself playing 50/50 on Commerical/Non-Commerical shmups because the budget does not bother me it's the gameplay itself and just because one man worked on the game alone does not mean it's going to be a bad game.

Anyway I'm not off to see if I can actualy beat some high scores on Viewpoint on my MVS, laters!
