And the biggest thing being that he played it in the electronics section of a Sears store in Canada.

Thank you all for the suggestions but none of these are it.

The thing that surprises me is how long it eluded me. It was on display at Sears Canada. Sears is not exactly a high end gaming store with specialized titles. A gameboy kiosk was right next to it! So it must be a mainstream system with mainstream game.

Well, this is ridiculous. Based on where it was and the general time period, this should, in theory, be relatively easy to figure out. What about Whip Rush? Actually, this could somewhat describe Bio-Hazard Battle.

I spoke to my brother, and he remembers the game as well. He believes the system was Genesis. He also believes the best way to describe the game is:

- Nintendo Metroid style game (lots of jumping / exploring) with almost robotic snakes coming out and floating in circles around you.

the jumping part can only mean it's Atomic Robo-Kid....

shmups that would fit the bill are Zero Wing, Curse, Darius II

the only metroid-style that I can think of is Phantom 2040, but it is completely devoid of snakes, spaceships and (playable) mechs. It is a great game though.

Guys. I want to thank you all for trying to hard. I think I'm going to quit my search at this time with a fail. It's been 20+ years and too many brain cells have since been replaced. None of these games are a match. At this point the only way I can find it would probably to do something drastic like subscribe to emu-movies download all console videos and go through 1 game at a time!! :(

Typically, stores don't run obscure crap on videogame kiosks, especially if they want to sell consoles. Sometimes the answer may be the most obvious. That Sears store would have been one of the coolest places on earth if it displayed even half of the games mentioned in playable form.

Lords of Thunder (turbo duo) i believe there were kiosks for this one as it was NEC's last ditch effort before TG16's demise

OP cannot just give up now! How are we as nerds ever gonna accept a failure to identify a random obscure, vaguely described, game from the 90s?!

That is exactly why I'm giving up.. just too much time has passed. I've been looking at so many screen shots / video captures .. I need to rethink my approach, or just give up.
