Trying to remember a game from the early 90's
Trying to remember a game from the early 90's
When I was a kid, I remember a console game I used to play at the local sears store. I thought all these years that it was R-type on the turbografx-16 but after seeing online gameplay I realized it's not.
The game is a side scroller. Alien futuristic type game. Your on some kind of planet and you jump around in what seems like caves. There's things all around you that you shoot. I recall r-type like long snakes coming in and out. They go around you and the trick was to know where to stand to not get hit.
There were 2 memorable things about the game:
- how big the characters on screen were and how colorful and dark they were
- I believe (this could be wrong) that your character in later stages changed into flying ship from robot
I've been looking for this game for 25 years! Anyone know what it might be?

Re: Trying to remember a game from the early 90's
No. Not dark enough. Game felt almost b&w with bigger characters on screen.
Re: Trying to remember a game from the early 90's
But was it a pure shmup or some game with platformer elements ?

Re: Trying to remember a game from the early 90's
Thank you all for the leads but they're not right. I specifically remember the jumping around and this sort of materializing / fading into a level.
Re: Trying to remember a game from the early 90's
I'm going to take a wild guess and say Mr. Heli since you mention "jumping", "caves", "There's things all around you that you shoot" and "fading into a level". It was released on the PC-Engine though...
EDIT: Or maybe Atomic Robo Kid? Again, that was also released on the PC-Engine

Re: Trying to remember a game from the early 90's
Could you please explain the "jumping around"?
Was the game 2D? 3D? Was it a shmup? Did the player even shoot?

Funny, I was just about to post that
But pestro87's Atomic Robo Kid is a good guess also.

It was 2D side view. Very dark blue, gray and white. Very little color. It seemed like the flying snakes were coming out from the ground going in circles and going back in. Darn mind of a child.

Are you sure it was TG16?
Re: Trying to remember a game from the early 90's
I thought it was TG16 but not sure now. Maybe Genesis? It was a new system that was post NES.

Wasn't there a really old game where you control a mech that could change into a spaceship on the go?
The ship could fly and shoots a laser where its going, the mech could jump and had a homing laser.

Sinistron ?

Edit: I'm guessing it might be Deep Blue
Or how about Transbot aka Astro Flash on the Sega Master System? It was one of the SMS games on card (like TurboGrafx-16)

Again, edit:
What about Wings of Wor aka Gynoug on Genesis / Mega Drive. It's a side scrolling shmup, is very dark, almost B&W and has caves:

This has to be Arrow Flash for Mega Drive/Genesis.

I was also going to say Arrow Flash on Genesis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ex3ZOIvj4QoGrantWindsor wrote:This has to be Arrow Flash for Mega Drive/Genesis.
And also Psychosis on TurboGrafx-16: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d80JiPoTMXI
But Psychosis is so colorful.

In that case, one of the "snakes" is actually a penis. Thankfully, it doesn't move around the screen...or "in and out," as leonk stated.parallaxscroll2 wrote: What about Wings of Wor aka Gynoug on Genesis / Mega Drive. It's a side scrolling shmup, is very dark, almost B&W and has caves:
Re: Trying to remember a game from the early 90's
Another option is Metamor Jupiter (PCE CD).

It's gotta be BioMetal for the SNES.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JSCdhpUH2Q
Has some stages that are nearly b&w, (also some dark blues, grays and whits) cave-like levels and R-Type like snakes.

Re: Trying to remember a game from the early 90's
Well...
Side scroller, Alien, futuristic, planet, jump, caves, shoot, flying ship, robot.
That's the semantic field for like 50% of the games from that era.
Our only leads are the snakes and 'almost b&w with bigger characters on screen'.

My last guess is Mega Turrican on Genesis / Mega Drive.

Lots of jumping, shooting, side scrolling and the first boss is a multi-sprite snake. You seem to need to stand in the right place.

Re: Trying to remember a game from the early 90's
Remember that if he thought that it was R-type game, it has to be pretty damn similiar. Just a reminder, if someone missed it
