watched the first episode of You're Under Arrest! TV - I really liked it - charas are a bit pointy for me, however all other art is very very nice IMO. Loads of first person stuff, really good car/vehicle drawings - and preview for second episode seems that it's going to have an integrale in it :).

Yeah, 2nd episode (which I feel is a very atmospheric episode, rain and all) features the iconic Lancia Delta model.
Character art does suffer a bit from the style tendencies at the time - but not as much as some other titles :P

The first person stuff, along with some other creative camera work, really wowed me the first time.

I forgot to mention earlier, only the first 4 episodes makes up the OVA, 5 and forward is the TV series and the quality goes down something ridiculous :|

Toonami logic: Hey, let's show Hellsing Ultimate before we think about regular ol' Hellsing. They did that with a movie, too. They showed a movie from an anime they haven't shown yet.

The tv-series does introduce some characters that shows up in the movie, but that's it. Well, the soundtrack's pretty good too.

Well, it's not completely without merit. Once you get over the poor visuals it's a pretty okay watch.
City Hunter wasn't always that great looking either  (But it's visuals do hold up better)

Oh yeah no I didn't mean about the visuals - just general fun - overall I do like City Hunter's art, in fact usually Sunrise are overall OK, they never seem to be bad bad (ok maybe Curcuruz Doan but I love that episode anyway).

Really captures the feeling of a gray, rainy day doesn't it?
They've really done a good job with the audio in general, lots of great engine sounds

perfect environment for the car :)

yeah the sounds are completely accurate - also dash, dials everything - interestingly they chose to put wheels which were only ever used on the 'Sanremo grale' on the carin the anime, which was an 'Evo II' (the Sanremo grale was a '16v').

There's only one more episode left of Hunter x Hunter. I'm hoping that they'll at least do an OVA or a movie somewhere down the line.

Got around to watching this new-fangled "Attack on Titan" thing.

The first season is watchable for the most part, but if they get around to making more... hoo boy. This is a case where I'd rather they deviated from the source material: they've reused the same plot point three times so far. "Tae-chan is missing, save Tae-chan." ...I suppose it's possible Team Rocket will actually steal that Pikachu one of these days, but I'm not betting my kidneys on it.

I'ma saying it's a bit of a fad. When I compare how Steins;Gate spent its 25 episodes and how this one spent the ones it had, they're on two completely different tiers.

Maybe I'm just incredulous against the entire plucky shonen trope in a gorny seinen type world. Meh.

Wasn't the show shafted because of ratings?

continued with City Hunter last night after the recent talks, and just happen to spot some Lovely Angels (if somewhat crudely drawn) as Saeko pans the crowd with her binoculars:

this has me wondering how many other Sunrise productions have these two ladies hidden among the crowds, as they can also be seen in Patlabor TV series:

Thanks, now I feel like watching Patlabor TV again - would like to get those TV collections on blu-ray when money allows for that. Those screencaps looks way better than I remember the TV-series to look like

Dirty Pair-spotting might be a fun game to play, I'm sure there must be more cameo appearances out there.

Lei and Yuri make an appearance in the first Crusher Joe film too.

Not a Star Trek buff, but there's a tonne of Dirty Pair references in The Next Generation, some pretty blatant. Google it.

Have reccomended Dirty Pair to pretty much everyone I know now. The TV series in particular is wonderful in uncountable ways.

Yeah I couldn't put a name to the character either. I thought his attire looked a lot like that of Arion (also a sunrise production), but the long green hair makes me think otherwise.
MX7 wrote:Lei and Yuri make an appearance in the first Crusher Joe film too.
Ah yes I’d forgotten about that one. Though Kei & Yuri’s appearance is of course based on their light novels, as the movie predates anything animated Dirty Pair.

Dirty Pair reciprocated in Project Eden with this on one of the monitors:

Oh wow, no way. Googled it half expecting it to be untrue but there they are. Nice.
Guess it was payback for the numerous Star Trek nods within Dirty Pair:

Okay, Dirty Pair is starting to look awesome. I'll admit that before now I had only ever seen the first two seasons of Dirty Pair Flash, and the OVA Flight 005 Conspiracy, all of which I thought were fucking awesome (and Flash 2nd season has one of the best anime opening themes ever IMO)

I'll need to look up the DVDs... seem to recall Sentai Filmworks released the entire series in chunks not too long ago.

...

In other news, my obsession with Sentai and tokusatsu has led me to wanting to see Beast King GoLion again. I'll admit that the first time I saw it (via the AnimeWorks DVDs from the mid-2000s) I actually thought it was kinda dumb, especially the ending, but I'm starting to think that the things I hated back then might actually be boons now. My tastes have just changed that much.

I also wanna see Dairugger XV though (I've never seen the "Vehicle" episodes of Voltron), but chalk that one up as yet another case where "the first two thirds are easy to find and cheap as hell, but the third volume is fucking impossible or expensive when it turns up." Guess I could always find alternative means if, say, Volume 2 ends on a cliffhanger and I really have to know.

Hmmm... any other Sentai-style anime I should check out?

Bought both boxed DVD sets of GaoGaiGar back when Best Buy used to sell it and it was a trip to see those different smaller robots combine to form even more bigger robots + weaponry. The second half of GaoGaiGar picks up steam and finally delivers the goods in spades, plot-wise. The busty blond gal is easy on the eyes.

and then you have GaoGaiGar Final, which is even better

Sentai-style mecha as in combining? Or that silly style where the robot has a train going through its body like in GGG? Most of the combining shows I've seen don't see much action from the smaller units. Dancougar is apparently different though, so you could try that, haven't seen it yet myself though

Just watched Short Peace. I'd say it's not quite as good as Memories, but a similar experience and very cool nonetheless. A Farewell to Weapons and Possessions were my favorite works.

Isn't there a perfect information source for 80's / early 90's OVAs and anime ? I mean some place with dedicated articles and documentation ?

I can only find random stuff on blogs and forums, which it makes it hard to navigate through that period.

Not that I am completely uneducated, but I know I've missed quite a bit of stuff.

already had the Crusher Joe film and one of the OVAs on LD, but the Eternal Perfect Box was just too pretty to pass up.

not that I'm aware of. I think the animeclassicreviews site could have been that, but they stopped updating content long ago.

Sadly, one of my discs suffers slightly from LD rot if I remember correctly. Fun little show that, really nice soundtrack too.
For anyone thinking of watching this, the visual quality is subpar for what you might expect from an OVA but it's still a good watch. While it's based on a novel, which isn't uncommon for anime today (if it ever was), it's one of those show that feels like it could've only been made during the OVA years. It's a bit "B" and a bit quirky but charming.

Hm...I would love to see Golden Boy get a blu-ray release, if such a thing isn't already available. I think we talked about the show a page or two back but it's such a surprisingly good looking show that really would benefit from an HD re-release :)

I do like Ariel. I don’t love it but I certainly do like it, Deluxe more so than Visual. I didn't purposely seek out the laserdiscs on my travels, but a 340yen price tag was just too good to try and resist against.

Ah disc rot sucks. I’ve been fairly fortunate over the years with only two of my purchases being inflicted with the ailment, though of course time itself could very well change that number of afflicted discs.

Yes Golden Boy is absolutely gorgeous artistically, and with much finer detail many a person may easily miss; such as perfectly legible handwriting in notebooks, to the fully functioning gears on kintaro’s bike, these smaller details often on screen for mere moments. This is certainly animation that deserves a HD scan.

I really liked it - and it is definitely an influence on Evangelion IMO.
