Shmups for a noob

Post by MH5 »

Hello everybody. I'm fairly new to this forum and somewhat new to shmups (I have played them since long ago, but haven't played them "seriously" until a while ago) and wanted to get some suggestions of you hardcore SHMUPers.

I'm open to suggestions from Space Invaders to the modern "Little Flying Girls" Shmups. The system it runs on isn't really important. I can always use emulation (For arcade, i have no other choice but MAME anyways, since there is no video arcades in my city, and i don't have the money to buy the physical machine. And most of the good SHMUPS are on the arcades anyways. :P)

I hope to get acquainted to everyone here. Since i'm a single-player gamer mainly SHMUPS have been a great way to pass the time. :)

Turbografx-16 shooters are usually pretty newbie friendly. Check out Gate of Thunder, Star Parodier, Lords of Thunder, and Blazing Lazers.

Flying Shark, Rapid Hero (also known as Arcadia), Sonic Wings 2 or 3.

As a fellow "noob", I wouldn't worry too much about any specific SHMUP-games more well-suited to fresh aficionados of the genre.

Just take it easy and play the games held in high regard. Don't focus too much on "mastering" games. You ought to check the different kinds of SHMUPS.

When it comes to classic horizontal SHMUPS, I'd recommend R-Type, because it's a really fun and challenging experience.

Not sure if serious...

Mods can we create a sticky topic called "shmups for noobs" because we have this thread four times a month.

In fact I'll make the topic, you add the suggestions, someone else make the sticky. Kay?

EDIT: Actually I can't be bothered, someone else do it. Videogames, waste of time!!

Sure am, why wouldn't I be? It's pretty easy, especially if you're using Mao Mao. It's also fun and has great music and graphics.

I'm playing it now in the arcade. Given it about 30 credits and it's all smooth until stage 8. 8, 9 and 10 are abrupt difficulty spikes. Quite irritating that it's so easy to get there only for it to ramp up, I prefer an even difficulty gradient throughout.

Mao Mao? I can't see it being easier with her, she only temporarily pauses the action for a few seconds of point blanking - but the guys who deploy bombs deal way more damage to bosses.

I'm between Hi-en's homing shot versus the US guy with the parrot who's crazy powerful but damn slow for those sniper bullets.

From my experience I don't consider it too easy a clear, which is kind of what I assess when noobs ask for suggestions.

Sure it's not an easy clear, but I don't think that's what new players want/need. Being a wall is a bit of a negative though, yes. I'd probably recommend 3 over 2 for a lot of reasons, but I think 2 is a pretty good romp as well.

1) There is no such thing as a 'shmup for newbies'. If you're prepared to stick with the genre, you want to play something that's challenging but not beyond your comprehension, so as you play it you learn.
2) Get ShmupMAME. http://shmupmame.wordpress.com/download/
3) Get the ROM for Dodonpachi DaiOuJou*.
4) Make savestates of every part that's hard to you. Practice them and figure out why they're hard and more specifically - what you are doing wrong and need to do differently. Refer to a superplay if needed, like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TL3Q6CR-WjM
5) Practice for fun and to get better.
6) When the game stops feeling hard, get a 1CC. Cool!

*No, it doesn't have to be this game. But, whatever shmup you pick, you will eventually have to memorize parts of it or all of it to get consistent, it's not just DoJ, so just bear that in mind.

**By the way, it doesn't matter what you use to play (keyboard, pad, stick, etc) as long as you can either do correct input on it or are willing to grind it until you can. Make sure you can hit diagonals, repeatedly tap a diagonal, sweep from a diagonal to an orthogonal or back on command without slipping, etc.

Batsugun sp for aracde (its easy enough you 1CC in a week, if not a few days)
Batrider normal for arcade (if you are looking for something moderately hard)

I disagree. I only really started playing shmups this year and I find the novice modes completely pointless. if there was a progressive difficulty system on them like the iOS ports or touhou games then it could be worthwhile playing novice first then working your way up, but as it stands the novice modes are just way, way, way too easy. jumping to the normal difficulty after playing novice is just the same as going in blind.

Serious?
I think it's not easy at all, regardless of character chosen.
In fact, it's harder than most Psikyo games bar the latest ones.

I agree that they're pretty much pointless for most players because the difficulty spike is massive but for someone who just wants to casually play shmups they should be alright.

Personally I would have never gotten into the genre if novice modes were my entry point. They're snoozefests that sometimes kill you because you're not paying attention. I'm not even good at STGs or anything; novice modes are just that boring.

I would recommend playing these games on mame to see what you like. I would then suggest you invest in buying them. The bullethells can be quite pricey while the 2nd list are mostly genesis shumps which can be had for cheap (except musha). If dont want to spend money, then don't!

If you like bullet hells, here is my beginner's list of shmups:

Donpachi
Dodonpachi
Strikers 1945 series
Gunbird 2
Battle Garrega (this one is the hardest one on this list)
Ikaruga
Radiant silvergun

If you don't like bullet hells, here is my other list:

R-type
Fire shark
Truxton
Thunderforce 3-6
Steel battalion
Last resort
Musha

R-Type, Battle Garegga and Radiant Silvergun? Yeah they're pretty beginner friendly, dive right in.

Easy tier:
Same!Same!Same!
Pink Sweets
Battle Garegga
Tatsujin Oh (really nice visuals but a little too easy)
Gradius IV
DDP Saidaioujou
Mars Matrix

That should keep you busy for a while. :P

After you get bored of these easy games, you can move up to something a little more difficult like:
Espgaluda
Batsugun Special
Armed Police Batrider (Normal Course)
Futari Original

OMG, all these replies overnight? Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. :)
One shmup series i've been playing lately and i'm absolutely LOVING are the Raiden Fighter series. I like it because there are so many different ways to play (Many fighters, Two types of upgradeable, chargeable shots, Different patterns for slaves, Different types of bombs.) I just like shmups with many choices and ways to play thru. I also like the Aero Fighters/Sonic Wings series and Strikers 1945 series.

Sorry if the topic was available already, but i was actually surprised there was no sticky to a compilation of these topics if there was so many.

Anyway, thanks everyone. I hope to get along in this community. ;)

This happens in every topic. I love how everyone always jumps to the same arcade stuff as well as ports and stuff you gotta pay for without mentioning the metric ton of free stuff there is out there.
