Gradius V: what does everyone think?

Post by popawell »

Yeah this game is awsome. Nothing more to say about it. Also is it true that the japanese version of this game is diffrent? If so let me know!
And how do you get screen shots of a ps2 game besides using a camera?

gradius v is very good. the japanese version is the same in terms of enemies, the only difference is that "options" are called "multiples"

This is a great game. I just got it a few weeks ago, and I haven't been able to spend alot of time with it but so far it's incredible. It's the kind of game that could have rekindled a love for shmups with the masses. Anyone know sales figures on it?

The level design is great, the enemy design is great, and it's a real challenge for a player like me :P

Gradius V is without a doubt one of the worst games I've ever played. It's too long, terribly derivative, and the color schemes are awful! If I could go back in time and prevent the births of the rat bastards that "programmed" this vile piece of smegma, I would do so in an instant.

Naw, just kidding. It's awesome.

I love the game and have so since its 1st appearence. I finally found a copy used for 19 bux. I don't know why they switched the "Options" to "Multiples"?

^^ A tribute to Salamander, right? They're called Multiples in that.

i love it. it was the only shooter i played for the longest time (and i still suck). Gaiden is still better though. someone on these forums said "Gradius Gaiden is epic. Gradius V is just long." If you want credit, speak up.

I love Gradius V. I love the option formations and the level design.

I think it's great, although it doesn't feel like Gradius, more like a combination of Salamander and boss fights from Gunstar Heroes.

I love Gradius V too, but it does have a somewhat non-Gradius feel to it. On the other hand, the style is very similar to Gradius II. Gradius V's level 1 is quite similar to level one of Gradius II (the giant suns/stars/whatever they are). The end of Gradius V's level 2 has those little ships appearing out of nowhere that give you powerups like the beginning of Gradius II's level 7. And level 2's boss is the same as Gradius II's level 4 boss.

I guess it makes sense, though. Treasure used to work for Konami, and I believe they were responsible for Gradius II.

I wonder if Treasure was involved with Gradius: The Interstellar Assault. That game has some odd differences from other Gradius games and some similarities to Gradius V (no moai stage).

I enjoyed it for awhile until my skill could only take me so far, then I pretty much quit. I didn't find it worth the effort to try to get past my last tough point on that game.

im sure treasure has nothing to do with gradius 2.

now that one seems very possible, not only is it weird, but it also features the typical treasure controls (faster diagonals)

as for gradius V, as good as it is, its not the game for me, needs more arcade, however, ill probably get flamed if i list the things i dislike about it more in detail, and im quite tired of useless arguments.

Hmmm... The boss battles are more similar to RSG than anything else.

Treasure was formed by members of a former team within Konami. That team did Gradius 2, I believe.

what do you expect with Treasure..... ^_^

Honestly it beat out my expectations by a long run. I mean, 3 and 4 were great, especially the PS2 vesion, but since evolotion and change is often nice, this game really brought up the Gradius Bar, but still kept things relatively the same. It feels like Gradius, looks lik gradius, but ends up playing at a faster pace then prevoius games, and has become more Frantic.. i like..!!!!!!! ...After i got Gradius V .. i thought R-Type Final was kinda of crappy.. and i'm an R-type fan--->.. definitely let me down.

speaking of it... i think i'm going to go play now.

Gradius V is definitely awesome. The only thing I don't like about it is that it IS pretty long, and I find myself playing it less because of it :(

The members of Treasure that were first at Konami were pretty split up over different games, and according to sfkosmo it appears they never worked on a Gradius:

Actually, it doesn't say whether or not Gradius was done by Treasure. The list is incomplete and doesn't have any Gradius games on either the related or unreleated lists. Also, isn't it true that some Gradius games don't have credits at all? That would make it hard to find proof either way.

As great as Gradius V looks and sounds, Treasure has done better in this regard: Radiant Silvergun is aesthetically superior to my mind. Though I have to add the obvious qualification: the anime characters in RS are a bit silly. Perhaps, though, it is a virtue of Radiant Silvergun that it doesn't take itself too seriously.

They have been checked, just not added to the list. None of them have relations.

The only game you could get away with saying "Treasure made" while at Konami is Bucky O' Hare, which had four staff members together and was directed by Maegawa (CEO of Treasure).

Otherwise it is incorrect to ever say "Treasure made XXX while at Konami".

Oh ok. They need to add the Gradius games to the not related to treasure list ASAP to prevent any more confusion.

I like it. It could have used more interesting combos though. I miss my ripple laser. Also compared the huge amount of crap that R-Type has for you, Gradius V still feels a bit bare, even if it is hands down the better game.

Extra weapons are unlocked after beating Gradius V and I think the ripple might be one of them.

Ah, sweet. So that's why Bucky O'Hare os one of the best NES platform actioners ever made. I have got to buy that cart, me and my brother used to rent it a lot back in the day.
