Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Has anyone tried any of the retro guns like the Zapper or guncons on pvm/bvms? How well do they perform?

Great to know. Thanks!

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Instead of creating a dedicated thread for the subject, I will try my luck in this one first.
I have a couple of older BVM 2016p monitors, with relatively low hours counter (2xxxxh for all 3).
It seems like I can't get them to have a stable sync when having something connected via RGB with ext sync.
Tried my AV Famicom and SNES, and both produce and image much like one not receiving sync. I have of course selected the RGB and ext sync for the input.
Also tried resetting to factory default and thereafter doing the before mentioned settings for the input - same picture.
I have of course terminated the inputs not in use with resistors as recommended.
Any ideas?

Are your SCART cables c-sync or composite video sync? You may need a sync cleaner.
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
They are using composite video sync, which is working fine with all other monitors I have tested with - but these BVM monitors may require c-sync.nyder wrote:mchay wrote:Instead of creating a dedicated thread for the subject, I will try my luck in this one first.

I haven't had any luck locating manuals for the specific model.

Based on Fudoh's review; I finally found and bought a Pioneer PDP-V402

It's running Mushihimesama Futari v1.5 on a MAK Strike v3
Thanks Fudoh!

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Gratulations! I'm wondering why you got little borders around the Futari signal. Isn't Futari running at a straight 320x240 res? This way it should use the full 640x480 area of the panel.
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
I noticed that as well, but I don't know if Futari isn't running 240 straight; I haven't done any tuning yet on the PDP, might that be a cause?Fudoh wrote:Gratulations! Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
maybe. According to MAME Futari is running at 240p straight. If you use the size settings in the Service menu you got a much wider range of adjustments compared to the standard menu. With a title like Futari it should be easy to get it right. Once the source/panel pixel mapping snaps in, the picture will be a lot sharper as well.

What a sight !
Isn't there an 'auto adjust' command like those found on many VGA-equipped monitors ?

Any good way to play PS4 & X1 games into a BVM 24D (480p-720p) with no hdmi?
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Component carries 720p just finebadwhite40 wrote:Any good way to play PS4 & X1 games into a BVM 24D (480p-720p) with no hdmi?
edit: Sorry I got you totally wrong. Don't these consoles have component out anymore? That would be your way to go then. Otherwise you'll need to work with adapters and stuff, but I can't help you with that.

PS4 and Xbone ONLY offer HDMI output. Wii U is the only current-gen console with anything else available.

I'll be getting on of Behar's new VGA boxes for the Dreamcast and using it on my PVM 20L5 which supports 31khz. The VGA box has a sync combiner built in, so I should be fine. But as far as using the VGA output, is VGA to BNC my only option? I see a VGA to scart cable on eBay-- would that display in the full VGA resolution in 31khz? That would be ideal so I wouldn't have to keep swapping bnc cables, but scart can't do anything higher than 480i AFAIK
Thanks in advance!

SCART doesn't support 480p so I doubt it would work, unless you make or have a custom cable of some sort made the VGA to BNC cable is your best best.
Anyone have a Extron SS 200 kicking around they might wanna sell?

Yep, it's called Toro. Built in sync combiner and scart output too. Might be the best VGA box ever. Sales start sometime this week.nyder wrote:I bought the Hanzo and it doesn't work with my 20l5,is there going to be a hanzo with a sync combiner, or a stand alone sync combiner I can buy?FriendofSonic wrote:I'll be getting on of Behar's new VGA boxes for the Dreamcast and using it on my PVM 20L5 which supports 31khz. Sorry, that was more in response to ryu above me. It's unlikely there's an existing product (maybe, but most people would want to go the other way), but you could make one with an FPGA for downscaling if you had the know-how.badwhite40 wrote:Sure. Toro can output 480i & 480p (RGB + Csync) through Scart. You can use a Scart to BNC or VGA to BNC for your monitor.

Really?! That's amazing. That's really nice to be able to incorporate it into my scart setup like that. I had asked on Assembler if that was the case but edited my question because I thought it was a stupid question. Awesome news!

Latest addition, a BVM-A20F1U. So far the only thing I've connected to it has been a PS3.

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
could this device work on pvm l5's to work with the hanzo? http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=1 ... 1&format=2
Also, I just got 14l5 and was blown away by the picture quality with my 360, but i tried it with my n64 and it frankly doesn't look good at all. In fact, isn't part of the point of a crt is scanlines, especially with these pvm and bvm;s? Even on a older gen console (n64) with only composite cable I still can HARDLY I mean seriously hardly see any scanlines at all...Can I get a good n64 picture with my l5 or am I only gonna get good pictures with 360/wii/ps2/gamecube etc.
Also...I'm still curious about the item I linked above that might work with the dreamcast hanzo?? If not, what would be the best way to display dreamcast on an l5.
Lastly, I will take some pictures later. I think I might have some issues with the picture I dunno how to fix even going through every setting I can figure out with the menu button

I can't really tell what that adapter is supposed to do, what you need for your L5 series PVM is the new Toro that is coming out or a Extron SS 200 sync combiner.stonedrum wrote:could this device work on pvm l5's to work with the hanzo? http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=1 ... 1&format=2

N64 supports S-video, i would recommend getting that, or if you really are trying to get the best picture get it RGB modded.

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
that adapter would plug into the serial remote input of the l5, and then the other side with female vga would supposedly connect with the hanzo. I have no idea if that would work (ordered it anyway) but if it does, I will let people here know...nyder wrote:I can't really tell what that adapter is supposed to do, what you need for your L5 series PVM is the new Toro that is coming out or a Extron SS 200 sync combiner.stonedrum wrote:could this device work on pvm l5's to work with the hanzo? http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=1 ... 1&format=2

Another kinda random question is how come if I play xbox360 in 480p, the xbox dashboard then takes up the entire pvm 14" screen, but then when the game boots only about 80% of the screen is used?

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Hey everyone.
I've got a Sony BVM-20F1U. I'm running a SNES, NES, Genesis, Master System, and Playstation to it via SCART through a bandridge SCART splitter then into the monitor via BNC. The SCART cables are retro console accessories and the SCART to BNC connector is from wookiewin. I have a crisp picture on screen with all. The sync is set to EXT on the monitor.
I've got a couple of problems i can't nail down with my system that i was hoping you all could help me with:
1. Colors: The whites are very pink/ reddish. I'm not really sure where or how to fine tune the color. I've gone into maintenance to find the master color tuning, but no dice. The playstation is the worst culprit. All other colors are "slightly" off across the board.
2. Calibration: As an extension to the above, where can I get a SMPTE color pattern (or something close to reference, among other patterns) to set up this system?
3. Geometry: I've been working at tweaking geometry all afternoon in the maintenance menu and i still can't figure out exactly what i'm supposed to be doing. I use the built in cross hatch patterns but i'm not really sure how much of the pattern i'm supposed to see. When i lock in a setting on over and under, the 16:9 is curved much more than the 4:3. I feel like i'm going in a circle as I try to correct each. When i do finally get the normal 4:3 straight, i have, say, the lower right hand corner that is just slightly out of whack. I just can't seem to get it "straight."
4. Once i get the geometry configured, how large do i make the horizontal and vertical of the screen? What should i use as reference to determine the exact dimensions of the height and width necessary?
I see the rich, beautiful colors in the photographs everyone posts up and i feel like a fool screwing with this thing like i missed out on something that is obvious.
Thank you all in advance for any insights!

As a very rough guess, did you simply try the COLOR TEMP ADJ menu option (page 19 in this manual)?
As for SMPTE color patterns...outside a color generator, I think you might get along well enough with an old Avia / Digital Video Essentials type DVD. I've got one and it's pretty nice. However, somebody here recommended something free and better - I don't recall where it was or what the name is. For retro consoles, there's Artemio's test pattern suite.
For overscan settings, I recall reading a wide number of posts stating you can set different amounts of overscan in different channels - personally with a consumer TV (with only one setting possible) I'd set it so that all of the screen is visible on whatever consoles I'm playing. This might mean that one system is set essentially perfectly, while others have a little bit of blank space around the edges (and a new way for the CRT frame edge to show off wavy lines in the output, alas). I'd try to avoid this if you reference to one system with a high amount of overscan (needing the screen edges to be pulled in), but then you end up not using it, so that all your commonly used sources have blank spots - not only is this going to exacerbate any visual oddities, but it could also cause uneven tube wear. This may or may not be an issue depending on how much you will use the set, though, so use your best judgment. If you are considering using (say) 60,000 hours of sources showing borders due to underscan, then it might start to show up as uneven phosphor aging; otherwise, probably not.

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
I'm pretty sure just about any SCART splitter out there degrades image quality to some extent, so I wouldn't use them.
