STGT Gaiden: Doujin Label - The Aftermath

Post by KennyMan666 »

Well then.

We're still awaiting nasty_wolverine tallying up the scores for the final week and the final team standings, but now that the tournament is over, let's talk about how it went. Main discussion thread can be unstickied now btw, I wanted to make a new thread for this one.

There were hiccups along the way. Actually, no, there were some major issues along the way. But it was mine and nasty's first attempt at running a tournament, so all in all I think it went fairly decent. The first issue was the thing with the dates, there was that thing where we wanted to do it in early summer but then trap came in with his tournament and it was postponed and then suddenly started again and it became pretty chaotic during that first week. Issues with the games, people not voting, teams disappearing, and participation dropped off for each week, which I'm not surprised about since it was at the end of summer. I'll be honest, my own excitement dropped off as it went on. There was a fifth surprise/encore week in the plannings, but I decided to not do that given how few people actually posted any scores for Tumiki Fighters, so I'm saving that for the future. The voting/playing happening concurrently was a thing people had problems with, and when we added 24 hours inbetween, there were sometimes a not insignificant delay between voting closing and the score thread actually going up. This could certainly have been handled better.

But we've learned a lot for next time!

'cause if the interest is there, I sure want to make a next time happen, given that regular STGT seems to be on ice. If nasty's on board with doing it I'd be glad to work with him again next time, having two people did ease up a number of things.

Now, here's what I want to do differently for Doujin Label 2: The Labeling (won't actually be called that. Probably):

Set the dates set in stone much earlier. I want to aim for early summer next time, and have it decided one or two months in advance when we're going to kick it off. To avoid a situation like what happened with TRP-STGT this year.

Free agents won't be distributed to closed teams. Just look at what happened with Great Justice to understand why I say this.

A rigid structure for each week. Each week should have the exact same times for deadlines. Currently, I'm kinda thinking that voting should run Wednesday to Monday and playing should run Tuesday to Sunday. Get some structure into the whole thing.

Reduce number of games per week from five to three. While I'm hoping for more teams next time, the small number of teams meant a lot of ties in voting. Also some hotfixes to the voting process so that an absent captain won't screw their team out of voting.

More thorough testing of the games before they're put to vote. Yeah, we dropped the ball on this, and for next time will try all the game's functions to make sure they run smoothly. At the same time, we'll only be able to guarantee working on the hardware/software configurations we have, but that'll always be a problem with doujin games. Expecially older ones. And that's why we're also going to need people to mention any issues they have with the games asap. We should also have one or two backup games in store for each week.

There's probably more things which I'll note as I think of them, but for now, tell me how you think the whole thing went.

I think the easiest way to solve the voting problem is to give each person an individual vote and let them post it on the thread, i.e. the quickest way possible to get a bunch of votes. That way you'd end up with maybe 20-ish votes and much less chance of ending up with a tie.

My logic behind private voting is that private voting means people will always vote for what they actually want to play rather than vote based on what people have already voted for, and one vote per team means a team with five members doesn't get anything more to say about what game that's going to be played than a team with three members. Both of those are things I'd like to continue being things.

The RE-Labeling, good sir. ;)

Hiccups aside, I was glad to see a tourney devoted mostly to more under-the-radar stuff, and it looks like you're keen on doing it again and better than before, so hopefully Team Loser will get another opportunity to go Gaiden again.

I'll have to agree on your point in regards to distributing free agents. Quite a bit of complications involving Great Justice from what I read before and after deciding to volunteer myself into the team. This wasn't too bad all things considered. Hopefully less problems come up next time you and nasty_wolverine host another tournament.

Well, I do agree with kennyman on most of the points.

The worst problem was, in my opinion, the clashing of dates between Doujin STGT and TRP STGT. We probably lost quite a few participants because of that. Either way lessen learned, will make sure things like that dont happen again. I was disappointed in the turn out to be honest. we got probably a good 30-40 people. But would have loved to see participation in 60-70's

That aside, we will definitely host Doujin Label 2: The RE-Labeling the next year as well (all things considered).

Also, i do have a few other shorter tourneys planned inbetween (all things considered). I was thinking of a rapid fire solo tourney before christmas holidays. 7 days, 7 games, post whatever you got. Let me know what you guys think.

Woo, I wasn't expecting this back when I signed up. I enjoyed the game choices overall too so I'm glad I did now. Thanks to the team, as well as everyone else who took part.

Didn't Prinny miss week 1 though?

Winners! Heh...the interesting thing, looking at the scores each week, is that none of TWP actually finished 1st (or even 2nd) in any game, but we still won overall. Which shows the benefit of having 3 members who just show up every week and post consistent scores for each game. :)

Thanks for organising it. I enjoyed all 4 games, plus I managed to 1CC Sonic Ironstorm and Demolition Gunner while trying them out as well, which was fun. Will look forward to next year's tournament...

Yeah, he wasnt part of week 1, because he was not in the tourney it self, he joined as a substitute for captain. We decided to make his week 1 score average of rest of the weeks.
