The manual says they support sync on green, composite sync, and separate sync.

Cheers for that - 15Khz works great through the sync strike! Mario galaxy looks very nice in 480i - I'm looking forward to seeing it through component on this monitor although the Wii component quality is supposed to be pretty poor so not sure it'll be an improvement.

Fudoh has very kindly put me in the direction of some decent quality component transcoders so looking forward to picking one of those up very soon :)

480p is always an improvement over 480i.

Good to know thanks Fudoh, and thanks for all your PM help with this too, it has been invaluable :)

Sorry Fudoh, forgot to ask - do any of those transcoders introduce lag?

How about the official RGB cable for the Wii rather than component?

I've just been running it on RGB & it looks great actually. My aim is to go to component with my PS2/Gamecube era consoles with this monitor though for the non-interlaced, sharper image.

You're right, I don't think there was anything wrong with the focus - even my N64 looks pretty good - better than on my 25" Trinitron even though it's a bigger screen.

Real transcoders are 100% lag free.

Cheers Fudoh.

Interestingly, looking inside a capacitor has blown but I don't know what detrimental effect that's having, if any..

For comparison, here's the Toshiba: https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/+Mat ... 2796336561

The photo of the Network places is taken in 1280x960i, the rest are 640x480p

(It needs a degauss on the left, I know. And if you look at the top of the screen there's a really weird static wave to the image in all modes, I've not figured out what causes this)

Wait, what PVMs have electrostatic focus? I thought electrostatic focus was only used on tiny tubes, like those in oscilloscopes.

And electromagnetic focus doesn't imply a rock-solid image until death - lots of people report problems due to bad caps or other failing components involved with beam landing.

Ed - he was saying the NECs have electrostatic focus - good to know that though, it sounds like you're more knowledgable than the guy anyway. Can I ask, what is the effect of doing a recap of the monitor and what are the best ways to rejuvinate a monitor in general?

Thanks for that Cools - that looks very much like my NEC. It's good to know my worries were unfounded & just a result of my inexperience with these things - & I really appreciate your input on this. I'm loving the NEC now actually - it nicely complements my BVM and looks way better than my Trinitrons now I'm using it with actual consoles.

Shadowmask versus aperture grill :) don't think that one was a CromaClear tube.

Slightly jealous - thats a grail CRT as far as I'm concerned. I'd take an NEC Multisync over a BVM/PVM any day of the week.

Damn I feel a bit bad about that as you were the one directed me to it!

I'm more theory over practice here, so other people will be able to give you specific answers based on whatever you're working on - but from what I gather, it's similar to repairing most any other bit of electronics with large through-hold soldered components. There are well known procedures for that. Now, the part about testing voltages going to the guns while the set is working - that is something I have never been able to find out much about (other than 'it's dangerous, use an isolation transformer, and don't connect your oscilloscope this or that way') but any good TV repair tech should be able to do that. However with some luck you might be able to fix things by doing a simple part replacement without requiring lengthy time behind a scope - but I'm not sure about this, and it is best to make sure that all the parts are working best. You might fix one component, but some components which it feeds into are themselves weakened - or some voltages might need to be recalibrated - leaving other components (and possibly the entire device) still in bad shape.

Cheers Ed - this is all way beyond me & almost definitely not a good idea for someone of my experience to start messing around with! I'd probably opt to get any repairs done by a professional. After a bit of research, it seems there are a few good monitor/arcade repair places around which is good to know for the future.

Don't fix what isn't broken ;)

No need to feel bad, I'd not have been able to collect it and have no room nor real use for it!
