Finally made it to 1-5 in DDP: DOJ! (vid included)
Yes, after more than two years and two Cave console ports later, I finally managed to reach 1-5 in Dodonpachi Dai-ou-jou. If you asked me even a week ago if I was thinking of clearing the 1st loop, I would have said you were nuts. But now...
Anyway, my journey is as follows:
I knew Cave themselves offered many replays (the in-game replays, the included DVD, and the vids available at their site), but I chose to only incorporate the chaining strategies in the in-game replay - more or less. That meant I had to choose B-L. Yeah, I know it probably wasn't the best ship, but it's still better than anything Shotia and I'm not an expert (so no A-E). I thought putting all my eggs in one basket was a good idea - the thing moved like a friggin tank and it was certainly powerful enough. Plus green is my favorite color and the 2P gold ship didn't look too bad either. I generally would reach my limit at the start of 1-4.
After not getting anywhere for a long... long time, I decided I would try A-E anyway. I first thought it was too fast, but I then I realized I could get used to it... and the added firepower didn't hurt either. I was still stopping at 1-4, but I was reaching it fairly consistently, at least.
Then after reading some of BER's old posts I decided I would try A-L so I could take advantage of the larger bomb stock. If I'm reading his posts correctly, he got farther on his first day of playing DOJ than I have playing all this time, so clearly he already knows the limits of A-E and A-S. After I adjusted to the narrower shot (which is easier to adjust to than a change in speed), it was like cheating... I couldn't believe how many bombs I had! It was like I was rewarded for being an idiot - not that I didn't know what I was doing, mind you.
So yeah... it's all about A-L. That and my new attitude of not restarting. Reko, you're cute and all, but I just can't forget about Leinyan...
Here's the vid of my, uh, foray, into 1-5. Super exciting happy fun action right here, folks!

(I actually would have posted this at Gaming Journals but it seems I can't log in and I can't be bothered to clear it up, so...)

Well done, 3XL, getting past the 1-4 boss is always an achievement (the bastard still kicks my ass). The first loop ALL is just around the corner, go for it! ^_^
Leinyan is indeed a good choice for the increased bomb stock and weaker Shot which makes it a bit easier to chain. The only downside is that once you die, you are left with a pathetically weak Shot, and in later levels it can be hard to chain and recover from deaths.
(Exy all the way for me ^_-)

Keep going, Triple Lei!
By the way, I prefer to use Type B-E, because the highest score was obtained with this type. But I've read from this site that it also happens to be the easiest type to use for clearing the first round:
http://www2.ttcn.ne.jp/~inu/daioujyou/jiki.html
The B-E's strong firepower and wide firing range helps kill enemies before their bullet barrages become difficult, so you would end up using fewer bombs. And if you die, then your shot power level and laser power level are reduced only by one, so you recover from death with strong firepower anyway. Because of these factors, in less than ten hours, I reached the honeycomb section of stage 1-5 for the first time (I only played it in two shmupmeets).
Meanwhile, the A-L's narrow firing range makes it tough to destroy the small enemies that fly all over the screen (especially in stage 5). That could make you use your bombs more often. But if you can plan your bombs carefully and dodge more bullets, then you can clear the first round anyway. It'll be interesting to see whether you can clear the first round of DOJ with arguably the worst battle fighter type. :)

It was one of your Gaming Journal entries about your Bay Area shmup meet.BER wrote: What old posts are you referring to?
A little less than 3 hours ago I got a bit farther in 1-5 (not quite at the honeycomb?) and I've been spending all this time encoding the vid and uploading it! (I'll edit this post when the 2nd part is up)

I don't have a plan for stage 4 and certainly not stage 5, but still... not bad for the "worst" ship, eh?
(almost forgot - thanks, everybody

ATTENTION WORLD: I made it to 2-1 yesterday!
1-1
1-2
1-3
1-4
1-5
2-1
Making the switch to B-E really made this all possible. I made it to the boss with 1 extra life, 2 bombs and a Hyper. Frankly, I didn't think I would do it in this run; when those bullets turned to stars I was as shocked I was whenever I'd die earlier than expected. And when I got that "continue to the loop?" screen, I thought I was watching the DVD replay. Heck, I still kinda... sorta... don't believe it...
It would have been even better if I topped my score in this run too (this one only got me to #3), but now that I've done this, my goal is reaching 2-2 and / or getting 200 million.

I actually wrote this a week ago: http://www.underactive.net/justin/stop-0001.htmlShalashaska wrote:Hey, nice work Triple Lei!
Sort of off topic, but what capture software do you use? I recently bought a capture box but am having a hard time finding software that will capture without there being like a 3 second delay.
And thanks everyone! I couldn't (and probably wouldn't) have done it without this board. The only other game that nearly reduced me to tears was Ibara, so I think I'll go back to that.
