Fight Like A Robot!
Best new:
Under Defeat, ARC
Finally a new shooter that focuses on what is important. Not collecting stuff, not grazing bullets, not keeping rank in check, but simply BLOWING SHIT UP BIG STYLE!
Best retro:
Last Resort, NGCD
This year I literally "stumbled" into Neo Geo, and this was this years best game I had never played before. Pretty damn close to what I would consider a "perfectly" designed game.
Now I already got Pulstar lined up for the holidays. Whooo!

There was a lot of going on this year..some good thingsand really bad ones
in the world..anyway..I think everybody has found somethings that made this year special!!
I always was a BIG fan of the galaga series, so I was really pleased to see a new version of galaga for the psp...so the best shmup this year for me has to be GALAGA ARRANGED on the namco museum collection..( Yes, I'm a really old oldskool shmuper..haha!)
What is your shmup for 2005?

I am oldschool at heart, as well, and ZanacXZanac, even though it didn't come out this year, amazed me. I was already a Compile fan, but this game is simply THE best shmup that I have ever played.

Definitely Mushihime-sama PS2. A balanced manic shooter with beautiful visuals, wonderful characters and art presentation plus a tough yet friendly scoring system (love grabbing all those gold medals that come spewing out of the bugs) Sure it has some slowdown but it doesn't detract from the experience or overall difficulty IMHO. And of course it makes some of the nastier parts a little more bearable as if to make you think "If I just push myself a little harder and practice I can make this next run." And what's not to love about the insect enemies and Nausicaa inspired setting?

Seconded, word for word.barmskii wrote:Without shadow of a doubt.
MUSHI
I love it, although I am utterly shite at it
EDIT: Also, Phantasmagoria of Flower View was fun stuff... I just wish I could run it in 2-player for when my friends come over.

I can't comment on new shooters (no PS2 for elvis), but old shooters, I've fallen in love with Dangun Feveron this year ("Fever SOS" in the west):

I'm just so addicted it's not funny. I only stumbled across the game by pure accident, and now I'm hooked.
Looking to join the world of today soon I hope, and get myself a PS2 + Mushi. Damn that whole needing money thing.

Mine is a tie between ESPGaluda and Border Down. Neither of these games were released in 2005 but they are the best two shmups I played all year. ESPGaluda occupied most of my shmupping time this year. I'm still playing, hoping to get a 50+mil score soon. I bought BD back in '03 when it came out, but didn't get into, only played it a few hours, and sold it. I recently bought it back last week (along with Ikaruga) and I've discovered its true genius. It's all I've been playing this Christmas vacation. Look for me on the high score ranking soon (so far I can get 29 mil on Stage 1 red, but I haven't practiced the other stages yet).
Best shmup I played this year that was RELEASED in 2005 was ESPGaluda 2. Great game! Can't wait to play the port sometime in 2006.

i've got to say again that strikers 1945 part 2 is proving my favourite shmup of the year, possibly ever, and maybe even my favourite game ever. i suck at it and i can't get anywhere near a 1cc but the fact that no matter how well i'm playing there's a difficulty to accomodate me. and all the little subtleties and gold collection etc mean it will last forever.
i just need to figure out a way to avoid some of the boss patterns... and suck less...
honorary mentions also go to ddp, dragon blaze, and especially vulgus which has swallowed a lot of my life recently thanks to the capcom generations ps1 pack.

My thoughts exactly. Mushihimesama is a close runner-up, though, thanks to its Original mode.llabnip wrote:Trizeal (Dreamcast, 2005). A gift from the old-school gods.

You're in for a treat this Feb coming. ^_-Dylan1CC wrote:Also wanted to say for 05 arcade releases, I cannot wait to play Ibara when it's released on PS2. Raizing lives on thanks to Yagawa-san, Wakabayashi-san and Cave!

I do hope Ibara isn't a one-off as far as Raizing tributes/alikes are concerned. With the main brains behind Garegga now somewhat tied to the company, Cave can take so many new creative directions with regards to gameplay, control and other systems. I'm looking forward to seeing what Ibara 2 and other Yagawa-san productions come along in '06. (My money's on a Soukyu, Brave Blade or Great Mahou tribute, or a completely new style of game ^_-)
RAIZING LIVES! ^_^
