Most people in Japan these days watch anime through TV broadcasts and streaming, though. Blu-ray sales are pretty much the exclusive domain of collectors and hardcore fans who want to support the creators, so it's not really an issue to them.

It is more of an issue when companies like Aniplex try to sell the exact same discs in the US at the same price points, since the market's expectations are completely different.

Sure, four hours of vivid glorious decapitations is great and all, but is it really equivalent to a brand new computer?

(Ok, that's not totally fair. At least they bothered to hire some people to add an english option, so there's some added value there. Unlike with say the Monogatari series. To be fair, they'll never move the same volume as local primetime network shows do.

But holy fuark man, look at this sweet price on Prison Break season 1.)
