Talk to me about the Taiko no Tatsujin games

Post by ChurchOfSolipsism »

Put lots of yen coins in the excellent arcade machine in August (I don't even know exactly which version it was, the most recent one), now I'm wondering which of the many games to get for the PS2... is it largely preference or do you guys think that there are better/ more worthwhile editions than others? What opinion do people have on the drum controllers? There's no way their quality is as good as the arcade version, is there?

I played Taiko quite a bit when the Western version first released on PS2, and played the arcade game a lot around that time too. But after that I didn't really keep up with the series, so I can't tell you much with regards to what are the best games.

The controller though I can give some impressions on. The sticks that are included kind of suck, they are just basically plastic tubes so I recommend buying a set of actual drumsticks (but not actual Taiko sticks). It's different from the arcade for sure, as both the sticks and drum will be smaller, but I will say that the drum reads very accurately; I never had a problem with that. The only issue I ever had was that the drum slides forward as you play because physics. So I suggest putting it on a chair or something to secure it and make sure it won't move around much.

I recommend gloves for playing the arcade version. My hands quickly start hurting from the vibration when hitting the drum.

So the author
- doesn't like rhythm games
- assumes that everybody who plays them is imagining that they're really learning a musical instrument
- most importantly, doesn't understand the concept of fun or of other people having fun.
Thanks for posting!

Lol I emailed a Japanese merchant selling on Amazon.de yesterday asking if he was really selling a Taiko drumset including a game for a couple of bucks. Today he replies saying nothing but "comes with accessories". I check out amazon again and see that he has increased the price of the package tenfold.

Is this satire? It's like somebody summarized the modern gaymer's perception of arcade games into one small essay.

Cute comments as well. Why did you have to post that link? I feel like half of my brain is shutting the fuck down. I guess I need to go slap some hamburgers.
[Guitar Hero] really is kind of revolutionary in the ways in which it’s mind-blowingly better than most of the bemani series
P.S. And something tells me we had a shitstorm over that Ikaruga article.

The actionbutton reviews are kinda entertaining in a weird way but we shouldn't take them seriously. The author often describes unrelated parts of his life to the point that some reviews have a "ACTUALLY TALKING ABOUT THE GAME" caption in the middle of them. He also tends to focus entire paragraphs nitpicking on tiny details. He gave glowing reviews of S&P 2 and Bangai-O Spirits, though, so he can still appreciate "old-school" games. However, it is possible that his positive opinion about these (great) games is only/mostly because they were made by Treasure.

Back on topic, what about the 5 Wii Taiko No Tatsujin games? Are they playable without the drums?

Are the S&P and Bangai-O ones by the same person, just under a different alias?
I don't think digging through a bunch of text for an explanation on the score given and instead getting an endless rant about how an imaginary rhythm game player fucked the author's mom the other night is any entertaining, though. And let's complain about "non-transferrable skills" while sucking the dick of a turn-based RPG. Not even Insomnia can get this bad.

On topic, how hard is it to transition from keyboard to AC? Here's the situation: I have a simulator at home and no controllers, and the arcade I go to has a Taiko machine. I'm just wondering if it's possible to practice the reading and the drumming separately and sort of combine the two things later.

According to the "about" page, there are several authors. The S&P and Bangai-O articles were both written by Tim Rogers who is not the same writer as the Taiko no Tatsujin review writer. However, he is the editor so he greenlights the other reviews, and his reviews are also flawed.

This is becoming a farce: ordered Taiko No Tatsujin bang tap! Toomori7daime via amazon.de (via samurai_media_JPN, the same idiot merchant I have talked about before), but they cancelled my order, then put up the same package for sale again, but for a higher price. Sty clear of these asshats.

AFAIK, the Wii Taiko games can only be played with the Wiimote or Wiimote extensions such as the Tatacon drum or the Classic Controller. I didn't find the option to use GC controllers in the configuration menus.
Maybe it is possible to use an adaptor to plug the Bongos' GC controller cable on the Wiimote and select the tatacon as the controller in the options? Though I have no idea if such a device exists and if that would work and map well.
