SNES Mini RGB mod help?

Post by Akiteru »

It seems I've gotten myself into a bit of trouble. I've modded my SNES Mini for RGB by taking red, green and blue directly from the S-CPUN A and amplifying it with a THS7314 chip. Red and green both seem to be fine, but I'm unable to get a good connection from blue. It basically causes the entire screen to have a blue tint. I think the contact for blue on the SNES PCB itself may be damaged since I was unable to get solder to catch on to it when I tried. Is there a way to connect the amp directly to pin 158 on the S-CPUN A or am I screwed? I'm somewhat frustrated with myself that I got into this situation, haha. I really appreciate any help. Thanks.

Here's a video of what happens: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtZakVUR7cA

Some pictures of how it's rigged up:

It's a bit hard to tell in this picture, but I was unable to get solder to catch to the board on the B pin, only to the pin itself.

Why not ditch the THS7314 entirely and grab video from the encoder instead? It's much easier and offers similar results.

I'd double check to make sure that stripped parts of some of th wires aren't touching when you set it down. The blue signal wire looks to have quite a bit exposed at the multiout. Perhaps it is pressing onto the green pin as well? In general you should probably double check the entire setup, especially the legs of the amplifier to check for any solder bridging.

I can't really tell from the video, but does the picture correct itself when you're pressing down on something?

I'm not sure which solder pad you think is damaged, but you could run a jumper wire from the S-CPUN to past wherever you think a pad is damaged.

It doesn't fix when I touch it, the blue tint just kinda gets darker. I think I'll do what ApolloBoy said and just try the encoder method. It seems the only difference is the THS7314 can most likely eliminate the vertical line issue, which I don't even think is present on this console. Thanks for the help.

You won't know about the lines until you do it. In my research I've not seen much consistency in reports.

The line is definitely still there on the Jr SNES, but it's not as bad as the original SNES. You see it so rarely that it doesn't bother me.
