Sudden speedup in games by x.x (Eden's Aegis, BWR+)
Sudden speedup in games by x.x (Eden's Aegis, BWR+)
I've been playing some games by x.x. While I find them to be quite entertaining, I can't help but wondering whether the game runs correctly on my machine. Yes, I set the fps limit to 60 fps. (I'm on Windows 8.1.)
What happens is as follows: Slowdown kicks in, which is fine, but the transition back to normal speed quite often comes with a rapid speedup for a few frames. This is the number 1 cause for losing lives, and makes those games quite a lot less enjoyable, since those instances don't feel like errors but more as if the game tripped me up. Is this kind of game behaviour normal?

Playing it on my Windows XP computer, I don't have that blip in extra speed as it returns to normal speed.

Hmm... That's pretty weird. I don't think I get any speed up at those points, but I will say that sometimes they're a bit too abrupt for my taste which can be pretty bad. I suppose if you turned off wait you wouldn't get that problem
but otherwise I don't know.

I guess it's the same phenomenon. Those transitions are not at all as smooth as in Cave games.LordHypnos wrote:Hmm... That's pretty weird. I didn't feel like creating a new thread just to ask so I'll just bump this one. I heard that x.x was creating a new game, is that true? Trying to google x.x's games, as many of you might know, yields... unwanted results. I heard it from STG Weekly's episode on BWR and BWR+, which was awhile ago. So I was thinking if it was true, then his game might be done by now.

I didn't think he was because he hasn't updated his site since 2010, but looking at his diary, it appears that he is.

It turned out this was an issue due to Win 8.1. I set up a virtual machine with Win XP, and this phenomenon no longer occurs.

Thanks Windows 8!
You can turn off the slowdown functionality in BWR+ if you find it easier/more fulfilling to go without, by the way.

Did you 1cc any of those games with without slowdown? If not, then please don't advise people to turn slowdown off. I've seen plenty of guys make the same recommendation as you, but many seemed to only have cleared the first few stages. The same group of people seems to be busy calling certain games "easy" just because they happened to made it through the first stages on one credit. I guess you can call this "tough shmupper syndrome".Patashu wrote:Thanks Windows 8!

x.x's games have a few spots that are pretty tough without slowdown, so there might be a good reason the developer made "wait on" the default.
Re: Sudden speedup in games by x.x (Eden's Aegis, BWR+)
This is an issue with windows 8.1 if you set your refresh rate over 60 hz and you aren't use the 60 fps frame limitation. If I ever play either of these, I have to change my refresh rate from 144 hz to 60 hz or the games will run fast.

Those games do not get easier with "wait" turned off.

I'm pretty sure that isn't what anybody is saying...Bonus! wrote:Those games do not get easier with "wait" turned off.

Wrong thread. Nobody is saying that here. Patashu said nothing out of line.Bonus! wrote:http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=49460

He implied that some would find those games easier with "wait" off.

If you die every time slowdown ends due to a bug, then yes, wait off would be easier.Bonus! wrote:He implied that some would find those games easier with "wait" off.
If you can fix the bug, wait off is no longer easier.
It's simple.
