Need some Direction from the Pros about Crt screens

Post by Drachen Zor »

Hi I'm about to buy a Sony Trinitron KV-36FV310 CRT for $60 with the stand In excellent condition. What I'm wondering is, will this be suitable as my mame/hyperspin pc display... will I be able to achieve arcade perfect/near? If so, what connections/settings would I need to utilize too achieve it Vga>rgb>component OR just component also maybe a Ultimarc I'm a little lost at this point & just need a little direction pointing. Thx -Drachen Zor

MAME + a TV is nowhere near arcade-perfect. It's good, but don't go fooling yourself. To get closer, you'll need a 15khz monitor with one of those arcade-VGA setups. Then the visuals will be correct, but you'll still be hindered by emulation. Not to shit on your setup - it is nice - but it's honestly not even arcade-close.

Isn't there a way to make my comp output 15Khz via ultimarc video card & yeah I realize emulation is inferior. But what can I do to at least make my comp TO crt look & act decent ? any suggestions besides rgb monitors Im not quite ready for that. I figure there is some basic configurations I can make to improve over all product. I have a very decent comp & crt display surely I can produce something of higher quality. So is it even possible to get a pc to produce any kind of arcade quality? Ive read a lot of mixed info but many say you can use convertors to improve or produce some rgb arcade effect via rgb to component ??? Should I even buy the sony kv-36fv310 I was under the understanding it was Decent for arcading? People do use mame with crts right? im just looking for an info source to continue my journey lol im on a budget but the purest in me loves making limited tech perform to the best with what I have... only asking for a tiny amount of wow effect for the friends even tho ill kno better ^_^

If possible, I'd save up a bit more cash and get a Sony PVM. Awesome (professional) picture quality, good range of inputs, and easily 'tate-able for vertical games since it's perfectly flat on all sides. I have one, and I'll never go back to television CRTs for gaming.

Not sure if you're in the US, but this one looks to be good:

look around a bit, you're bound to find one you like closer to wherever you are.

GroovyMame + CRT_EmuDriver + an European TV with scart RGB is monstrously close to arcade perfect, and costs peanuts.
Actually in many cases it's almost impossible to tell unless you know Mame's flaws about non-properly emulated slowdowns in games you've mastered already.

Of course you can't do that with a non-RGB TV, sucks to have to source broadcast monitors.

I would still definitely get that Sony KV-36FV310 if you have the room for it. It's not as "good" as a Sony/NEC/Mitsubishi/JVC broadcast monitor (and not going to be TATEable), but it's great for pre PS3/360, big screen console gaming. That's the best Sony consumer SD flat CRT and 36" is the biggest size they came in.

Ok that makes sense... I'm not really interested in any newer generation gaming so I'm thinking I'll just pass on the TV it's huge & 3hrs away haha but It is gorgeous. Time to man up to rgb as this is obviously going to produce more of what I'm looking for. My only concern is screen Size now I was really hoping for a larger display In my main room for friends to go wow. I feel like I would really enjoy a NEC Multisync XM29 Plus it seems to have a better size & convince for pc but I guess impossible to find ugh.... Do you guys have any tips on finding a rgb crt locally, I've thought about calling medical supply warehouses in my area or maybe broadcasting stations. I've been using Tempest craigslist searcher but with no luck.
