STGT Gaiden - Week 4 voting

Post by KennyMan666 »

I said I'd get it up and SO I WILL

Apologies for short descriptions, might expand them when I've had some sleep.

So, for the fourth week, we're taking this in a different direction. Namely, rightwards.

By which I mean that week four is Hori week! Me and nasty are each responsible for about half the games picked out for this week. Turns out most freeware doujin shmup developers prefer verts.

Warmachine Overload
Image
A hectic one where you have four weapon pods to customize.

Minishooter - RS Delta
Image
See that "mini"? It seriously is. The playing field is small (and so is the window until you hit E, so do that), but that doesn't diminish its quality. A number of ships to unlock. Expect Normal difficulty for now.

Psyche Metal the Bleeding
Image
A quite red game. Red character, red backgrounds, red... bullets? To solve this, rename the file BAKU.bmp in the game folder to something else, and BAKU01.bmp to BAKU.bmp, giving you far more visible pink and green bullets instead.

Galshell Blood Red Skies
Image
So this one might be somewhat NSFW - some uncensored breasts and a little bit of gore, but I guess not much more than you'd see in a horror movie. The site linked to is SFW, but some other things from the same developer are less so, so I don't recommend clicking around on the site in decent company. Assuming you're ever in decent company.

Tumiki Fighters
Image
And so well-known doujin dev Kenta Cho gets to be part of STGT Gaiden as well. In Tumiki Fighters, you catch fallen enemy ships to be part of your own craft.

---

Team captain sends the vote, and to not get anything confusing this week, send the votes to only me, KennyMan666.

Deadline for getting your votes in is Tuesday, September 2nd, 23:59 UTC.

Every download link, with the exception of Hydorah, is down :/.

Minishooter and Psyche Metal both throw a 404 error. The other two sends me to the Vector.co.jp main page.

Here's a link for Minishooter, can't really find the creator's site for Psyche Metal though

Well, Galshell and Warmachine links worked when I tried them literally right before posting the topic, and they work when I click them now, so either they were both temporarily down at the worst moment or... it's something else (hotlinking issue?). Minishooter and Psyche Metal links not working was 100% my fault, as I mirrored those files and then managed to write the links wrong. Fixed now, if Galshell and Warmachine links still not work for other people I'll mirror those as well.

The main download link on the Galshell page hasn't been updated to reflect Vector's current URL structure, so it just redirects to the front page. The game is still available on the author's Vector account though, which I linked above.

The situation with Warmachine Overload is similar, except that it has been also removed from Odan's Vector account so it's no longer available. You can't even navigate to the game's page from Astro Port's site. No luck with archive.org either.

Well, there you go. Uploaded Warmachine and Galshell zips and updated links, now everything SHOULD work.

Time for BM's "can I get it running in 8.1?" report:

Warmachine: Boots up fine, runs slowly in fullscreen, no issues windowed.

Hydorah: Boots and runs fine in fullscreen. Sometimes zips right through the main screen after a game over and starts up again for some reason, but no big deal.

Minishoter: Boots and runs fine, until you get to a particular boss (I think it starts off stationary but takes off a little ways into the battle, and shoots purple bullets), and the framerate drops to unplayable levels. If you hang in there it will recover afterwards, but I don't know if this happens anyplace else.

Psyche Metal: Full screen runs too slowly, windowed seems okay.

Galshell: Game opens by default in fullscreen and runs slowly, don't know how to switch it to windowed.

Tried Hydorah so far. It has a Save system, and loading/saving a game DOESN'T wipe your score, nor give any indicative if you used it.

I still have to try the others. Just wanted to point that out.

Well thats not good. Not sure if we can leave it up to good faith in a tournament. Otherwise we may have to boot the game.

Hydorah is a decent game, but I'm not sure it's a good choice for a STGT, especially given how long a single credit can potentially last. I think it can run to about 90 minutes if you play every stage...

We actually have a backup game for this week, and we're discussing what to do.

And by backup game, I mean swapping back in the game we replaced with Minishooter because we really wanted that.

Right, between a dubious save/load system that seems like it can be used pretty much to savestate the game without any hints and being far too long, Hydorah is out. Therefore, Tumiki Fighters is back in.

If the one team that already sent their vote wishes to change, they may do so.

Edit: Also, if someone plays Minishooter and figures out how to unlock what's supposedly some white squirrel/mouse-looking ship, feel free to share, because it's the only thing I haven't been able to find how to unlock yet.

I've tried out Warmachine Overload a bit. I like it, but there appears to be no obvious downside or limit to keeping the game in constant slowdown mode, which obviously makes things incredibly easy. Can anyone else confirm this?

yeah, warmachine is pretty difficult if you don't use slowdown, I don't think it should be in this tournament.

iirc, you can't save a replay if you ever use the slowdown function?

Just tested that. No, you can still save replay if you use slowdown, but no worries - because the game doesn't save your score if you do! Therefore, in the situation that it becomes the week's game, all score submission screenshots will have to be of the screen that shows all zeroes after a credit where slowdown was used.

Warmachine Overload would be so much better and I would actually try to beat it if it saved your damn pod configurations upon exit :(

Okay, voting ending is prooooobably getting a bit postponed given my schedule for this week.

BUT it won't be if all teams vote so that I can close voting early (it's enough if it's a few hours early, so you still can try the games after the scoring week ends).

Five teams have voted, if the remaining two teams vote within the next... eight hours, I guess, there won't be any extension of voting deadline.

...goddamnit I can't count

Forget what was here, I actually COUNTED THE TEAMS WRONG. There's NINE teams, not seven. Goddamnit I suck.

Okay voting deadline postponed until I wake up, the result CAN still change since there's THREE votes uncast, not one.

Feel free to spend the next 7 hours while I'm asleep posting about how I'm an idiot

Okay, turns out that didn't matter, 'cause I haven't gotten any more votes.

That means that the game for Hori week is, still, Tumiki Fighters. Stay tuned for score thread.

Was Tumiki Fighters made before or after Blast Works?

Except with the added ability of creating your own ships, designs, levels, graphics, etc...

Anyway, I just wanted to check instead of immediately going on a bs rant based on misinformation like I usually do.
