Raystorm in Taito Memories pack - how good it is?

Post by AVT »

I own Raystorm and G-Darius for PSX and I`d like to know, is "Taito Memories" versions better looking than PSX (i always turn texture smoothing on when playing this ones). I know that there is no more slowdowns in G-Darius, but what about screen resolution and texture smoothing? Was it updated, compared to PSX versions?

"Updated" is the wrong word, since all the games in Taito Memories are direct arcade ports. I haven't played much of either (though I do own the Memories and PSX versions of both Raystorm and G-Darius), but they feel a bit smoother and faster overall. Of course they're lacking all the extras found in console ports.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

I have RayStorm (PC CD-Rom) from Xplosiv Arcade Classic as well as the PSX PAL version and the PC version has higher resolution 640x480, smoother frame rate, but the textures look just about the same as the PSX release (No texture smoothing).
Arcade & Extra modes are present but some extra console features like “arranged music tracks” is missing.
It feels more like the arcade version though as you insert coins & the intro cut-scene does not have music.

There were extras in those games? I really can't remember any secrets from G.Darius but I haven't played the PS version for ages...

the R-Gray 0 ship, and a different soundtrack iirc. Not sure if these features weren't present in the arcade...

Edit: here, Zach Keene's review will shed light on the matter:

G-Darius PSX has boss rush, you can save the endings you've reached to be viewed later...maybe something else, I don't remember.

By the way, is it possible to 1'cc the PSX version? (Or any of the 3 for that matter...)
Back in 1997, the best I could do is complete it in Extra mode, with 3 credits @normal difficulty, using the R-GRAY-2 craft.

Today I used all 9 continues to beat the PC version.
I guess I'm getting old ;)

This was my 1st PSX game by the way and one of the main reasons I got the PSX for.
