list of system exclusive shmups?

Post by Synnae »

Hey, it's been a while since I posted here. But now I'd like to ask for help again. This time I'd like a list of system exclusive shmups. (or at least only the good ones)

By that, I mean shmups that appeared only on a single system and nowhere else. For example: BioMetal only appeared on SNES. Eliminate Down is only for Genesis. Bari-Arm is only for Sega-CD. And so on...

But I also count games that originally appeared exclusively on a single system and then were veeeery late re-released ONLY on digital distribution platforms (Wii Shop Channel/PlayStation Store/Xbox Games Store/etc). One example: Super Star Solider was originally only for PC-Engine, but then it was re-released on Wii Virtual Console, PlayStation Network and Windows Store.

Also, there's no need to list Arcade exclusive shmups.

How about portable reissues? Super Star Soldier is on the PSP's Soldier Collection.

Image

Asking since I'd mention Gradius Gaiden (only other physical version is similarly on the PSP Gradius compilation).

Assuming we're not counting portable reissues, here are a few.

FC

Abadox
Crisis Force
Final Mission ("S.C.A.T." or "Action In New York")
Guardic Gaiden ("The Guardian Legend") (ARPG/STG hybrid - pure STG with code)
Summer Carnival '92: Recca

MD

Battle Mania ("Trouble Shooter")
Battle Mania Daiginjou
Crying ("Bio Hazard Battle")
Elemental Master
Eliminate Down
Gaiares
Gley Lancer
Gynoug ("Wings of Wor")
Musha Aleste ("MUSHA")
Space Invaders '90
Twinkle Tale
Undead Line (very different from MSX2 and X68k versions)
Verytex

SFC

Bio Metal
R-Type III (the GBA version is such an utter atrocity, I would not consider it a "port")
SDF Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie
Super Aleste ("Space Megaforce")

PS1

Gradius Gaiden
R-Type Delta
Harmful Park
Kyuiin
Zanac Neo (on Zanac X Zanac compilation)

SS

Blast Wind

SNES/SFC:
Rendering Ranger R2 (Not a pure SHMUP).

PS1:
Einhander

PS2:

Neo Geo:
Aerofighter 2 & 3 (Sonic Wings)

Firepower 2000 is not SNES only - it was released as Super SWIV outside of the US and ported to the Mega Drive (with an additional opening stage) as Mega SWIV. Never mind that the original SWIV was on the Amiga, which is not identical but very similar. Likewise, Strike Gunner STG was also an arcade release.

Master System
Astro Warrior
Bomber Raid
Power Strike 2
Transbot
Aerial Assault (GG version is quite similar so might not count)

PS2
Silpheed: The Lost Planet

GBA
Iridion 2

Xbox 360
Eschatos
Ginga Force

Thanks, I wasn't aware of that. Weird name change.

HU Cards

Coryoon
Magical Chase
Lost Sunheart
Hanataaka Daka
Gunhed
Soldier Blade
Super Star Soldier
Final Soldier
PC Denjin
W Ring
Metal Stoker
Violent Soldier
Terra Cresta II
Dead Moon
Toilet Kids
Aldynes (Super Grafx)

CD

CD Denjin
Choaniki (NOT Ai-Choaniki)
Download 2
Gate of Thunder
Image Fight 2
Rayxamber 2 + 3
Metamor Jupitor
Nexzr
Super Darius 2
Seirei Senshi Spriggan
Spriggan Mark 2
Sylphia
Terraforming
Kiaidan 00
Star Parodier
Alzadick
Macross 2036
Psychic Storm

Winds of Thunder & Ginga Fukai Densetsu Sapphire are not exclusives but I think the PC Engine originals are far better than the Mega CD / PSP ports.
And yes I know there are other exclusives but they suck (Deep Blue & Legion for example).
PS: The Soldier Series & Star Parodier should be played on a big screen so I pretend the PSP port doesn't exist :D .

There's also Bangai-O Spirits!

And after that, I'm out of names. The list probably extends with DSiWare & 3DS eShop games, such as Kokuga.

- Magical Chase was ported from PC Engine to GameBoy Color.

- Override was ported from X68000 to PC Engine, and it was ported to JP Wii Virtual Console.

- Though Super Darius II was altered, it's still based off Darius II, and it was ported to JP Wii Virtual Console.

A list like this would only be interesting if you exclude ports completely (including digital) and focus specifically on games you can play only if you have the original software and system, ignoring the existence of software piracy and emulators.

Good examples of this are Blast Wind on SS and Eliminate Down on MD.

That's pretty random, thanks. I haven't kept up on VC releases.

This ends up being a slightly different question though, because to those of us outside of Japan or other places that have decent arcades, exclusive arcade ports only available in one place are probably just as interesting.

Right, I think that's what is typically meant by "system or console exclusives". Not ports and not present on any other systems/consoles. I guess a broader use pops up when people say that Battle Garegga was exclusive to Saturn. I assume that the op is using the phrase in the more typical sense.

Not really interested on those.

EDIT: Actually, it'd not hurt listing those as well. So, if anyone wants to, I'd appreciate it.

I have no problems if you guys want to make a list like this later on a different thread or something. But as for mine, I'm counting the games that were originally console exclusive and then ported to digital distribution. I just think there's a difference between "console to console" ports and "console to digital media" ports. Basically, when a game is ported between consoles, they receive significant changes (i.e graphics, audio, etc). But as for digital media stuff, the games most of the time aren't even slightly altered. These titles are simply run in their original forms through software emulation.

Right, I was being sloppy and failed to address the case of digital rerelease. I'm inclined to agree with you. Zanac Neo, e.g., is a console exclusive on the usual way of talking. Sorry for being unclear!

In all fairness, I can't think of ANY other 2 player shmup on the SNES, that - under certain conditions - ought to count for a lot. As the others said, there was a coin-op version too (just as... bare bones of a game, considering its time and age).

Override came out on PC-Engine a year before Last Battalion (X68K version) was released. Sting chose to remake the game as their first self-published release (PCE original was published by Data East)

Magical Chase was also ported to Windows 98, and it contains all the graphical updates there were in the USA HuCard version.

Aldynes is only on the SuperGrafx.
Zaroigar is only on the PC-FX.

There are roughly 500 billion doujin shooters on X68K that you can't play anywhere else... A few favorites of mine are:

Direct-X
Y2
Exceed
Galseed II
Angel Dive
Illumination Laser
Gikadiver
this list is never ending honestly....

For non-doujins, Scorpius is amazing if you are man enough to play it.

Oh and Aleste 2 for MSX is fantastic, as is the original MSX1 Zanac which is totally different from the FC and EX versions.

Yeah, you're right...I mixed up the release dates. Override came out in Jan 91, and Last Battalion came out toward the end of 91. I never knew there was a Windows port of Magical Chase; I'll have to track that down. Not big on computer games, so stuff like that slips by me.

Speaking of Aldynes, I play it more on PS3 than I do on my SG. Analog control really works great with the game. It's only on JP PSN, though.

By "system-exclusive", do you mean "only available on one, solitary hardware format"?

Because I though this was about shmups originating on consoles, never seeing an arcade release.

Basically, this is what I meant.

It'd also be interesting if someone can point out the best versions of shmups originating on consoles. For example: Super SWIV originated on SNES, but was later released for Mega Drive as well. So, which one is the best version?

I'd like to see more comparisons like this. It'd help me a bunch.
