Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Today I made a Megadrive 1 Stereo Scart cable, but with c-sync (75ohm resistor and 470uf capacitor from CXA1145 Leg 11 to C-sync on the 8 pin DIN) and with 75 ohm resistors and 470uf caps on R, G and B instead of 220uf, so it follows the CXA1145 diagram exactly.
The result being, instead of the dull picture on my retrogamingcables.co.uk Megadrive stereo lead (no caps), the output is as vibrant as the official Dreamcast Scart cable I have, a sharper picture (slightly) and less jailbars (still barely visible).
Here are some pictures of it on my PVM-2044QM

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
I work at a recycling center in East Lansing, Mi and we have recently received 4 NEC CM-2791 televisions. Looks like they have RGB input via bnc connections. I have no desire to replace my Trinitron with one but these things are going to be e-wasted, meaning disassembled and recycled. I'm pretty sure we also have a 27" Trinitron that will also get dissected and recycled. I'm willing to talk to my manager about saving them if anyone in the area is interested. When I say "save" I don't mean "give". My manager will most likely tell me we have to charge something ($5 to $15 is my guess). Sorry, I would give them away but I don't run the show. They haven't been tested yet but I will make sure we can do that before you commit to stopping by.
PM me or post here and I'll see what I can do. I feel bad watching pallets of Trinitrons and now these NECs get sent to an e-waste facility.
if you don't see this until after 8/25 they will probably be on their way to the e-morgue.

I was in a good mood, then I read your post.

It is worse though, you can always replace pets.

As incredibly morbid as that is, yeah, there will always be more pets to be had, whereas working CRTs will run out soon enough...

I know, it's terrible, so come save them! :0
I'm pretty sure there used to be a few active people from Michigan on these boards. Should I make a thread and see if more people notice?

I'd say go for it, it's a win-win situation if they're saved, so I'd try to get the word out as much as possible.Crayon wrote:I know, it's terrible, so come save them! :0

You want a sad story ?
I saw a documentary about the used electronics black market in Eastern Africa, where full containers of CRT TVs from Europe arrive, but only about 2 in 10 still work because of the poor transportation conditions.
Most of the broken ones instead of going to the contracted recycling factory, end up in wild garbage dumps where kids salvage the toxic components.
Corrupt customs officers built that business with other corrupt employees from the recycling factory who don't want to bother with such heavy devices.

I take it I need to have a higher post count to be able to get to the trading forum / post messages (and possibly not be registered today), but I am interested in taking an NEC monitor off your hands if one is still available. I'm looking for a monitor for my downstairs rec room to play older consoles on, and I'll try a 27" RGB monitor for $15 first before splurging on an XRGB-Mini and HDTVCrayon wrote:I know, it's terrible, so come save them! :0

Anyways, I live in Chelsea but work in Jackson, MI so I could head up there after work tomorrow depending on your business hours. Thanks in advance.

I have no idea on the age and weight. But they look exactly like that. I have a couple photos in the thread.Ed Oscuro wrote:Age & weight?Crayon wrote:I work at a recycling center in East Lansing, Mi and we have recently received 4 NEC CM-2791 televisions.

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Finally sold my XRGB mini 2 days ago, thought I would be happy playing on a big screen HDTV with the xrgb mini setup but it just doesn't look nearly as good as games on my BVMs does. Having now owned consumer Trinitrons, PVM 2530, PVM 2950Q, PVM-20L5, BVM 20F1U, BVM 20E1U and the XRGB mini, I can safely say the sony BVM 20F1U and 20E1U blows everything out of the water. The picture just looks so much richer and vibrant on these 2 monitors. So much that I was willing to sacrifice a much larger screen size. These 2 monitors are nearly identical, the 20E1U has 1000 lines of resolution compared to the 20F1U's 900. Before I started looking into PVMs and BVMs I always thought there couldn't be that much of a difference between the Trinitrons and the PVMs and BVMs but I am now a believer.

1000 and 900, not 900 and 800These 2 monitors are nearly identical, the 20E1U has 900 lines of resolution compared to the 20F1U's 800

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
oops I stand corrected, error fixed, thanks Tobias. And thanks for all your help with all the questions regarding the xrgb mini and various monitors/displays. In the end, it just wasn't for me.Fudoh wrote:1000 and 900, not 900 and 800These 2 monitors are nearly identical, the 20E1U has 900 lines of resolution compared to the 20F1U's 800
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
just curious, but is it possible to hook up old PC gaming computers to the sony BVMs? anyone try it? Been wanting to play all those classic Sierra graphic adventure games I grew up on but don't want it looking like crap on the modern LCDs.
Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Normally you'd use composite/S-video out from the graphics card, does your BVM have these inputs? VGA DOS games run at 70 Hz as opposed to NTSC 60 Hz though, so I'd just look for a good VGA CRT (i.e. not by Samsung
)

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
I was thinking of just getting an old PC with a VGA connector and connecting the PC to the BVM 20F1U with a VGA to BNC cable. Can anyone confirm this will work?Xan wrote:Normally you'd use composite/S-video out from the graphics card, does your BVM have these inputs? Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
Not with a simple cable like you've envisioned. PC VGA output has two separate syncs while BVMs require one, for starters. Depending on which BVM you have, the vertical sync rate will likely be nowhere near correct, either. This is probably especially true if you are feeding it strange resolutions. EGA seems to be 21KHz.slai50 wrote:Can anyone confirm this will work?
Using a BVM for PC games is a waste - I'd look for a nice old PC monitor instead; there ought to still be plenty around.

Re: Fudoh's ode to old display technology
hello to all the community. am new in advent "CRT Fetish" and ventured to purchase a sony monitor after seeing the beautiful images that it can provide. but unfortunately I did not much luck on buying my monitor, or better I was lucky in the price but it is not working 100%, then I wonder if I can count on the help of members to arrive at a possible solution, and would like to know also if I open a new topic or post in the same. thank you
